The Incredible Journey

So…..without further ado….I want to tell you about the book I selected for our Poppins read this month!  This is a book you can either purchase at any bookstore or find at your local library:  Sheila Burnford’s classic animal adventure story, The Incredible Journey.  Burnford published The Incredible Journey back in 1961, and it has remained a beloved read for animal- and adventure-lovers since then.

The book’s main characters are animal:

  • Luath, a young reddish-gold Labrador Retriever
  • Bodger, an aging Bull Terrier, whose full name is Ch. Boroughcastle Brigadier of Doune
  • Tao, a fiesty and independent Siamese

However, the trio is owned by a Canadian family, the Hunters, who must spend the summer in England.  Their dear family friend John Longridge offers to take the animals to his home, some 300 miles away from the Hunters’ home place, to care for them while the Hunters travel.  Due to a mix-up and a lost page of a note he leaves for his housekeeper while he goes on a hunting trip with a friend, the animals get outside and decide to set off for home, across many miles of uninhabited Canadian wilderness.  The animal friends encounter wild adventure in many forms (lynx, bear, Ojibway Indians, porcupine).  They have to forage for their own food for the first time ever…sometimes successfully.  Will they make it home to the Hunters’, before winter sets in and they’re lost forever?

This chapter book would be a wonderful family read-aloud, or would be enjoyed by elementary students on their own in about 5th grade.  The animals’ personalities and breed characteristics are displayed beautifully throughout the challenges they meet in their journeys.  There are some definite moments of peril, which more sensitive children might struggle with.  Sheila Burnford’s descriptions are beautiful and illustrate the beauty and challenges of the Canadian wilderness.  Readers will adore the deep friendship between the two dogs and the cat.

Enrichment Activities

  1. The Ojibway (or Ojibwa) Indians are found in both the United States (where they’re often known as Chippewa) and in Canada.  If you’d like to know more about them, their history and lifestyle, visit the excellent website for kids called Facts for Kids:  Ojibwa Indians by Laura Redish and Orrin Lewis.  (Remember that Internet sites can change overnight; parents should always visit these with their children!)
  2. Luath, Bodger and Tao encounter many animals, both wild and domesticated, on their travels.  Do a unit study on some of these; learn about how they live, what they eat and what they look like!  Here is a list of some interesting animals mentioned by Burnford;  moose, deer, brown and black bears, beaver, muskrat, otter, fishers, mink, marten, Canada goose, bittern, wild duck, speckled trout, steelheads, pike, pickerel and whitefish.
  3. After, and only after, you’ve read The Incredible Journey, watch one of the movies adapted from the book!  Disney’s 1963 version of The Incredible Journey might be available at your local library; it follows the book quite faithfully and uses the same animal breeds/names.  June2014 209We own the 1993 Disney version, Homeward Bound:  The Incredible Journey, which is quite entertaining, but changes the story somewhat as well as the animal breeds/names.

And now, for the giveaway!
