Poppins Book Nook main image 2014 - 2015I love this month’s theme, which is What Will I Be When I Grow Up?  Haven’t all of us….and our children….spent hours playing dress-up, taking imaginary trips to outer space or fighting bad guys in a cape or with a sword?  The possibilities, when you are a child, are seriously endless.  I’ve found an incredible series, though, which can provide hours of fun and information for you and your children in exploring their futures:  The Old Schoolhouse‘s incredible Wanna Be SeriesThis e-book series, geared for children ages 8-13, is full of awesome activities, interviews with experts in the various fields, and lots of creativity to fully engage you and your children!  You can learn about chefs, firefighters, police officers, vets, missionaries and many others.  I’ll be writing about one of my favorites today.

Wanna Be When I Grow Up I Want to Be an Artist

This fantastic ebook has so much in it!  Even if your child may not lean towards being an artist, the activities and interviews are wonderful and would make a great unit study.  When I Grow Up I Want to Be an Artist can be purchased on its own for $8.95 and you can download it immediately to your computer.  And what will you and your child discover?  You’ll get to meet actual artists of various kinds:  a children’s book illustrator; a graphic designer who’s also a comic strip writer; and another graphic designer who creates art on the computer!  Children will learn about the process of creating art, selling it (what kind of salary can an artist make?), and many kinds of art (ever heard of robotic art?).  This is a wonderful ebook, complete with games, projects and art; and full of the excellence TOS gives to all its publications.  You can find When I Grow Up I Want to Be an Artist   at the TOS website, along with all their other wonderful resources.

There are so many wonderful activities you can do with your child as you explore what it’s like to be an artist.  Here are some of our favorites!

  • Visit your local library free on this fall’s Smithsonian Magazine‘s Museum Day Live!  Every fall, many U.S. museums offer free admission for two guests.  This year it’s coming up right away on Saturday, September 27.  It’s limited to two free tickets per household, but that’s still an amazing start and quite a discount for some museums.  Click thru the link and get some free tickets for your next field trip!
  • Check out some of Mike Venezia’s wonderful books about artists from your local library.  He has some beautifully illustrated books which tell, for children, what the lives of famous artists are like. Read about Van Gogh, Monet, Picasso, O’Keefe and many more.
  • Create art with your children!  This year, Jackson and I are doing art journaling.  This is a wonderful way to keep creativity at the forefront of your minds, and a wonderful way to create art together.

And now, for the giveaway!
