A new Living Book review….and Giveaway!

If you’re like me, you certainly remember Pippi Longstocking from your childhood.  I was always quite mystified at the way Pippi was so self-sufficient, adventurous, and frankly, how she survived!  I was able to take my son Jackson to see a musical version of Pippi when he was a preschooler.  I could tell that he liked it, but I think he felt the same things I had as a child about Astrid Lindgren’s character!Rasmus

Well, author Lindgren has another story about an adventurous child…only this time it’s a boy!  Rasmus and the Vagabond is the tale of a valiant young orphan who, longing for a family, hits the road in early-20th-century Sweden.  He has lived as long as he can remember at an orphanage, from which children DO get adopted….but, it seems, only if they have curly hair.  And being a girl also helps.

Rasmus has straight hair AND he is a boy.  So he believes that his chances of being selected by a family are absolutely….nil.  After causing a disastrous accident with the orphanage head, Miss Hawk, Rasmus flees the orphanage, believing that somehow he will find a family that will love him, out on the road.a Fall 2014 466

Instead, he finds a tramp.  Paradise Oscar tells him that he is God’s best friend…and he takes Rasmus along on his travels.  They meet all sorts of incredible and unusual events.  They sing for their supper, and they meet a couple of terrible thieves.  At the end of their journey, will Rasmus finally find a family to be a part of?Rasmus 2

Astrid Lindgren is the author of many children’s books, and Rasmus and the Vagabond is a beautifully-written living book that will delight children as well as parents who are on the lookout for wholesome yet fun books which will capture the imagination of readers.  Lindgren paints a picture of Sweden as it was years ago.  While I’d avoid modern-day stories of children running away and meeting up with tramps, the tale Rasmus and the Vagabond is innocent and charming, yet adventurous enough to satisfy the child reader who’s longing for a wonderful story.
