Recently, we received a Bible study created especially for teens from the Schoolhouse Review Crew. Prasso Ministries provided us copies of their Teen Prasso Homework Manual and Teen Prasso Teacher’s Manual to review.
Our son, Jackson, entered the teen years just this spring with his 13th birthday; so my experience with teen Bible studies was on the limited side. As a matter of fact, this Prasso study is the very first teen Bible study we’ve ever done! I’d love to tell you more about our experiences.
Teen Prasso Homework Manual
Prasso Ministries takes its name from the Greek word prasso, which means “to practice, to form a routine, or to perform repeatedly or habitually” (from the Teen Prasso Homework Manual preface). I am personally a big believer in the power of God’s Word to transform a life. Regular Bible study, done faithfully over the course of time, has an impact on the student. It not only produces character; it builds faith in the God who loves us. With this Bible study, teens can begin to (or continue to) build habits for life of delving into the Word of God. Not only that, they’ll learn about God, life, and making the best choices they can.
The Teen Prasso Homework Manual is a softcover, spiral-bound 8 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ book. It contains 12 chapters that are each designed to be completed over a week’s time. Each lesson has 5 days’ worth of study, plus one day for reviewing the week’s key points. In addition, each chapter has a page of questions designed for group discussion. The manual is a consumable resource with places to answer questions included, so you’ll want to have one Teen Prasso Homework Manual for each student who’ll be taking the course.
And what do these 12 chapters cover? In them, you’ll find lessons on the following topics:
- God the Father
- God’s Love
- Spiritual warfare
- Recognizing…and refuting…lies
- Pride and selfishness
- Putting what is learned into practice
- and more!
Teen Prasso Teacher’s Manual
The Teen Prasso Teacher’s Manual is the perfect companion to the Teen Prasso Homework Manual. It is an 8 1/2″ x 11″ spiral-bound softcover book. It’s designed to be used alongside the student manual by a parent, youth group leader, or teacher. It has an overall lesson schedule and tips for encouraging discussion in a group, plus outlines for each chapter’s discussion and conversation. One especially fun part about the Teacher’s Manual is that the author has written a story about a pair of teenaged brothers who are taking a hiking trip in the Rockies. Each chapter has another episode of their adventures (and misadventures), and illustrates some of the key points taught in the student manual.
For the purposes of review, we used this Bible study about three days each week. (However, during the formal school year, we’d use it for five days running.) I used the teacher’s manual to lead and guide our study times. I would read a portion of the boys’ story to Jackson, then he would do that day’s Bible study on his own. The questions in each chapter required him to think and to ponder; to look up Bible verses; and even to memorize a key verse for each week. By using this format, we had about 3-4 days’ worth of the story to read aloud daily, before Jackson progressed to the student work in his manual. On the last days of the week’s lesson, he’d just do the work without my introducing anything.
We both found the Teen Prasso Bible study to be very enjoyable and Biblically faithful. The story about the teens on their adventure was exciting and interesting to read; we couldn’t wait until the next day to learn more about their ups and downs! I loved the life principles that it taught as well, and the map allegory that the story and the study employed. Will our children head out into life as young adults with no map and just experience life with trial and error; or will they use the Bible to guide their ways? This study teaches teens what to look for, how to make choices and how to follow the path of life, in a manner that’s both engrossing and effective. And it enables parents to engage in fantastic conversations with their young adults!
Here’s what Jackson had to say about it:
“I liked what it helped me learn about God and how great He is and how big He is. It is a good study for my age and older.”
