5 Days of Tips for Homeschooling Parents: Exercise

Hello!  Welcome back to day 2 of the Schoolhouse Review Crew’s Blog Hop, featuring 5 Days of Tips for Homeschooling Parents.  My tip for today is—drum roll please—exercise!

5 Days of Tips for Homeschool ParentsYes, I know.  The dreaded exercise.  Just how can a mom (or dad) fit it into an already busy homeschool schedule…and why would we want to?

The “whys”

Why should we as homeschool parents exercise?  There is so much data out there at the moment that can help us decide that exercise is important.  Here are a few that are important to me:

  1. Improved stamina
  2. Weight management
  3. Benefits for whole-life health and fitness
  4. Energy for daily life
  5. Good example for kids

Honestly, I need all the help I can get to do my best each and every day.  I have a very energetic kiddo whom I’m homeschooling.  And while I may never have as much energy as he does, at least I can have the energy to be as present as possible every day, if I eat healthily and exercise.  Plus, he can see the results of my exercise time and be encouraged to participate in it himself.

So…how can a parent add in exercise?

I’ve noticed that pediatricians, celebrities, bloggers and writers are all focusing on the importance of exercise in a child’s life.  Especially in this era where technology is so attractive to children, it’s fantastic for parents to lead the way, even  Organized sports can definitely be one avenue of fitness for children and teens.  But I do believe that family exercise is both an enjoyable activity for togetherness as well as benefiting everyone’s fitness level.

We’ve done a number of different activities together.  Try hiking.  Or treadmills.  Visit the local swimming pool, or ride bikes (either stationary or outdoor bikes).  There are even a lot of exercise DVDs out there that the whole family can do together.

There are also curricula out there that replicate PE in a homeschool environment.  These are fantastic for teaching rules and histories of organized sports, like basketball, tennis, golf, and so forth.

FitbitI love using a pedometer to record all my steps in a day….and kids love these too!  Of course there are the amazing (and pricey) watches and bracelets; but inexpensive ones work just fine for kiddos.  (Not that I haven’t been drooling over the lime green Apple Watch….which has fitness apps on it….as well as all of its other coolness….)  You can set family step goals and even have a competition!
