No cold case is more important than the one that destroyed her own family

Every small town has one unsolved case that haunts its memory, festering for generations below the surface with the truth of humanity’s darkness. Star Cavanaugh is obsessed with the one that tore her family apart.

Over sixty years ago, Daisy Doe was murdered and discarded outside Pineville, Alabama, buried without a name or anyone to mourn her loss. When Star’s father tried to solve the case, he was also killed. Now a cold-case detective with resources of her own, Star is determined to get to the bottom of both crimes. But she’ll have to face an entire town locked in corruption, silence, and fear–and the same danger that took two other lives. The only people in the town she can trust are her grandmother and the charming Mike Luinetti, and both of them trust a God Star isn’t sure she believes in. Can Christians so focused on the good really help her track down this evil?

With an irresistible combination of sharp suspense, faith, humor, and authentic regional flavor, Burying Daisy Doe will draw fans of Terri Blackstock, Margaret Maron, Jaime Jo Wright, and J.T. Ellison.

Burying Daisy Doe–A Review

Star Cavanaugh has been through the wringer. Thanks to the events of recent years, Star can claim many of life’s most stress-inducing events (move, career change, loss of a relationship, and more). But, the most difficult moments of Star’s life occurred before she was born, and are cloaked in mystery. With her mother’s death, Star is officially an orphan–and is determined to solve the mystery that left her grandmother and father dead in the same small Southern town, nearly thirty years apart.

And so, Star moves to Pineville, Alabama and accepts a job at the local diner, located in the town’s drugstore. The kindly pharmacist rents her a room (until she can get her maternal grandmother’s vintage Airstream trailer to town and move into it), and chats with her occasionally, filling her in on some of the town’s history. She serves the townspeople at breakfast each day, and gets to know the area farmers, Miss Doris’s Bible study ladies, and the extremely handsome and charming police chief, Mike Luinetti.

Star hasn’t counted on Roscoe Carver though; the elderly Black man who comes in one morning for breakfast, fixes his eyes on Star and is certain he knows her family. She has hidden her real purpose (solving her family’s murders) and profession (former cop and current private investigator) in favor of finding out all she can before the townspeople learn her real identity. But Roscoe knows the genetic lines of Star’s face; as a 14-year-old boy he had admired her grandmother as she walked into the pharmacy. Later, he makes the horrifying discovery of her body. They called her Daisy Doe, since no one apparently knew who she was. Roscoe will never forget the woman he found, and he knows Star is connected to Daisy immediately.

Star’s truth comes out before she’s discovered much of anything about either her grandmother or her father, whose life was taken in Pineville as well. Suddenly, she (and everyone she talks with) faces the same danger that killed her family. Will Star survive long enough to discover who the killers are–and bring them to justice?

Ramona Richards’ fantastic dual-timeline suspense novel will captivate readers. She has an excellent ability to create a sense of place (small Southern town with LOTS of secrets) and fascinating characters while telling a story that will keep you glued to the pages. You’ll root for Star and be inspired by her strength, perseverance, and desire to set right the wrongs of history, inflicted on her family. I will be watching closely for the next Ramona Richards book, and I dearly hope that Star will be its main character!

Enjoy! –Wren
