ABOUT THE BOOK
Title: They Turned the World Upside Down Author: Charles Martin Publisher: Thomas Nelson Release Date: January 5, 2021 Genre: Christian Life/Spiritual GrowthIn the aftermath of Jesus’ resurrection, the testimonies of those who had followed him were so bold and so powerful that they turned the world upside down. What would happen if we lived with that same kind of faith today? Walk in the shoes of the disciples, as New York Times bestselling author Charles Martin brings their stories to life with his storyteller’s perspective. In the first century, believer didn’t just mean someone who heard and agreed with Jesus; it meant someone who acted on that belief. And when the outside world saw the faith of these new believers, they declared “they turned the world upside down” (Acts 17:6). That’s the kind of believer Charles Martin wants us to be. The kind who understands that the truth of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection is so powerful, it reshaped history. The kind of believer who lives with that same world-changing faith today. In his second non-fiction work, he uses his talents as a novelist to walk you through the lives of the disciples in the aftermath of the Resurrection and as they spread the message of the Gospel and “turn the world upside down”, leading up to Paul’s ministry in Thessonalica. In his beloved lyrical style, Martin illuminates key moments from Scripture and shares stories from his own life as a disciple. With the same depth, sensitivity, and emotion that have made his novels beloved to millions, Martin will helps you engage with your faith in a new and inspiring way.

My review of They Turned the World Upside Down
I’ve been a fan of Charles Martin’s fiction for years, ever since I read his marvelous book Unwritten years ago. He is a master storyteller, and until I heard about They Turned the World Upside Down I had no idea that he’d written nonfiction. He has, though, and the result is a book I wouldn’t have missed for the world. Martin’s latest book combines Scripture, prayer, and the lives of not only Jesus but the earliest followers of Christ to create a book that is highly readable, but more importantly, made an enormous impact on me. It is healing, encouraging, exhorting, and a book that you must not miss.
Something I’ve always enjoyed about Martin’s books is his ability to create characters that are appealing even as they are experiencing brokenness or struggle; who get up again after falling; who reach out for faith in situations where faith seems absent. In They Turned the World Upside Down, he looks at Jesus and the early church. He utilizes his abilities to bring characters to life to give us a peek inside the lives of the disciples, of those healed by Jesus, of those whom He impacted during his time on earth and especially His ministry. What would it have been like to be Peter, after denying Christ, and then, experiencing His resurrection? What about the woman with the issue of blood…or Jairus, watching Jesus interact with the now-healed woman as his daughter is dying at home? (Of course, we know the other side of that story but Jairus didn’t, at that moment!) Or, to be the disciples watching Jesus’ miracles, or His crucifixion? Martin breathes life into these men and women and enables the reader to gain a closer look of what it might have been like to live those moments with Jesus.
The author doesn’t stop there, however. Because They Turned the World Upside Down isn’t just a historical retelling of the events of the Gospels. Rather, Martin weaves Scripture, exhortation, and encouragement as he uses the Bible to show us:
- What two words Jesus speaks more than any other in His teaching and communication
- What true salvation will always include
- The role of the Holy Spirit in the lives of believers, even in the 21st century
- What the kingdom of heaven is
- Why the wounds of our lives can keep us from understanding the huge, enormous love God the Father has for us
- Why Jesus was willing to lay aside His privileges and standing to become Man, and our Savior
- And so much more!
Charles Martin discusses: shame; the enemy’s warfare against humanity; how the disciples were able to turn their failures into utter faithfulness and love that impacted the nations; and he does so with both a passion to tell the truth of Scripture and compassion for his readers. He is a pastor and clearly a Bible teacher, but he never speaks with judgment or while looking down on others. In fact, his great motivation for writing They Turned the World Upside Down seems to be to inform, to help, to assist, to speak truth; and, to heal. He includes prayers and key Scriptures in every section of the book, and they’re not just short, pithy prayers; they are prayers that will take you to the heart of your own life, issues, discipleship, and unhealed pain.
I knew that, in reading They Turned the World Upside Down, I would be in for a treat. What I did not expect is that God would do a mighty work in my own life. As I read, and took notes, and prayed through the prayers, God touched areas of pain in me that I had struggled over; and He healed them! I was challenged and encouraged to really take hold of God’s love for me and to be willing…to be willing. God used this book to help me to move forward, to realize truth, and to embrace what I hadn’t quite apprehended. What a gift!
I deeply appreciated that Charles Martin wrote this incredible book, and I’m so grateful that I was able to review it. I recommend it to you so very highly. It is a book that will help you to see your life, and the God who loves you, in ways that are healing, blessing, remarkable, and life-changing.
