Susan M. Meyers

Susan Meyers is an optimist who believes the world would be better served if everyone were more aligned with their greater purpose. The challenge as she sees it is not only to serve one’s purpose but also to adapt as it changes from time to time.

While Susan has worn many hats throughout her life, serving as CEO of her children’s business, 3 Sisters and a Brother, LLC is the role of which she is most proud. It began in the family’s basement when they were just 12, 12, 10, and 7 and soon expanded into two storefronts; within less than eight years, it became a well-known brand in the local community. As time passed and each of the children began to take flight, Susan and her family made the decision to close the business. With each of her four children off pursuing their own individualized dreams and careers, Susan had to deal with a new title; unemployed CEO; as well as the closed doors that it represented for her more personally. Finding herself questioning her own purpose and determined to regain it, Susan invested her time looking for answers. It soon became clear that none of the information she found talked to her concerns or even spoke the same language. Eventually, Susan was reminded of what she already knew and in the hope of helping others facing similar challenges, was moved to write The Decorating Club. Today, Susan makes her home with her husband and youngest daughter in Fairfield, CT. For more information, visit www.susanmmeyersauthor.com.

My thoughts

I truly enjoyed reading Susan Meyers’ The Decorating Club! I have to admit, I was captivated first by the gorgeous book cover (that inspired so much of my imagination). Susan’s foreword also piqued my attention, as she described some events that propelled her to write The Decorating Club. I also enjoyed the book’s format, which almost seemed like many stories-within-a-story.

Most of all, I felt as though Susan wrote this book as a ministry for women. As women, we have a lot of stages that we pass through during our lives. Teens, students, young adults, in a relationship or married, parent, mother of “fill-in-the-blank of your child’s age,” empty nester. Each one of these stages demands different things from us even as it produces different types of growth in us. Susan’s group of women first meets after main character Sarah moves with her family to a new area. She’s a decorator/designer by trade, a wife, and a mom of four. She meets other women and, rather than starting her business in a new area, proposes that they begin a Decorating Club; that they’ll each take part in designing and decorating a room in each woman’s home (and putting in the creative and physical work to get it done). Each of the women is very different and is facing different challenges in her life. As the women define what they love and what they’re looking for in their homes, their rooms are given new life and their lives receive a makeover as well.

The Decorating Club reminds women that while we may feel like we’re stuck in a season or a place, we don’t have to stay there. But sometimes we might need another person to help us see that; or to speak a truth that we aren’t yet seeing ourselves. Also, it reminded me how very important my own female friendships are. My close female friends provide a unique place for me, one of understanding, support, a listening ear, and compassion. And we never quite know when a conversation can propel us toward a new calling, career, or relationship. God has used my own friends to open my eyes to things I’d never have figured out on my own (or I might have, just much later!)…and Susan Meyers’ characters do the same thing for each other.

Do read this book, especially if you’re a woman who’s feeling stuck in your growth or in your own life. You’ll definitely feel encouraged, and renewed…and maybe you’ll have a giggle or two along the way!

Enjoy! –Wren (And don’t forget to enter the giveaway, where one winner will receive some charming prizes!)
