Excerpts from Battle Prayers
I was so intrigued by this title–and couldn’t wait to see what this book and its prayers could include. Here are two excerpts for you, so you can see as well!
EXCERPT 1
YEARNING FOR MORE OF JESUS
My soul yearns, even faints,
for the courts of the LORD;
my heart and my flesh cry out
for the living God.
(Ps. 84:2 NIV)
Dearest Jesus, I bring before You what is both a request and a gift.
A request, because it benefits me. A gift, because it pleases You.
My heart’s desire is for more of You. I readily confess that my ceaseless wanderings have proven that, apart from Your presence, I am spiritually bankrupt. Only in You have I found eternal life and truth (John 14:6). Only in You have I found the way to the Father’s heart (John 14:6), and apart from You I have no good thing (Ps. 16:2).
You were the one whom the psalmist longed for:
Whom have I in heaven but you?
And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail,
but God is the strength of my heart and my
portion forever.
(Ps. 73:25–26 NIV)
Jesus, I desire only You because you are the strength of my heart and everything I will ever need— forever. My soul cries out for more of You, because only in You do I find true purpose and meaning. You alone fit perfectly the God- shaped hole I so often try to fill with worldly and selfish pursuits.
So, I echo John the Baptist’s words: May You increase, and I decrease (John 3:30). May You grow in me as I become less. And as I become less, live Your life through me. Only in that kind of life am I truly pleasing in Your sight.

EXCERPT 2
LEARNING OBEDIENCE
He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.
(1 John 2:4–6 NKJV)
My endless platitudes and continual finger- pointing have worn thin. I have concluded that talking about obedience— especially in regard to other people—i s much easier than living it. Lord, show me how to be a doer of the Word and not a hearer only (James 1:22).
Readily I admit that living according to my own desires is much more comfortable than living for You. Yet Your Word admonishes me that if I really love You, I’ll keep Your commandments (John 14:21). My heart’s desire is to grow in love and obedience. I don’t want to be a liar by claiming to know You while walking in disregard to Your Word (1 John 2:4).
In my hard- hearted condition I so often wait until I’m dangling by the rope of my own selfishness before I cry out to You and change my ways. You died to free me from the clutches of sin; why should I return to a life of selfishness that only brings bondage? But I know that to obey is better than sacrifice (1 Sam. 15:22). Obedience means more to You than repentance.
Teach me how to walk in obedience. Do what it takes to make me clay in the hands of the Master Potter. Nothing in my life is sacred except my devotion to You; I place Your purposes above my preferences. Embed Your law in my mind and write it on my heart, so I will be led by my relationship with You rather than a list of dos and don’ts (Jer. 31:33).
