About the book
Charlotte Anne Mattas longs to turn back the clock. Before her husband, Sam, went to serve his country in the war, he was the man everyone could rely on–responsible, intelligent, and loving. But the person who’s come back to their family farm is very different from the protector Annie remembers. Sam’s experience in the Pacific theater has left him broken in ways no one can understand–but that everyone is learning to fear.
Tongues start wagging after Sam nearly kills his own brother. Now when he claims to have seen men on the mountain when no one else has seen them, Annie isn’t the only one questioning his sanity and her safety. If there were criminals haunting the hills, there should be evidence beyond his claims. Is he really seeing what he says, or is his war-tortured mind conjuring ghosts?
Annie desperately wants to believe her husband. But between his irrational choices and his nightmares leaking into the daytime, she’s terrified he’s going mad. Can she trust God to heal Sam’s mental wounds–or will sticking by him mean keeping her marriage at the cost of her own life?
Debut novelist Janyre Tromp delivers a deliciously eerie, Hitchcockian story filled with love and suspense. Readers of psychological thrillers and historical fiction by Jaime Jo Wright and Sarah Sundin will add Tromp to their favorite authors list.
About the author, Janyre Tromp
Janyre Tromp is a historical novelist whose loves spinning tales that, at their core, hunt for beauty, even when it isn’t pretty. She’s the author of Shadows in the Mind’s Eye and coauthor of It’s a Wonderful Christmas.
She’s also a book editor, published children’s book author, and lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan with her family, two crazy cats, and a slightly eccentric Shetland Sheepdog. And if you ever meet in person, you pronounce that first name Jan-ear.
You can find her on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, and her website, www.JanyreTromp.com (where you can grab a free copy of her novella Wide Open).
My thoughts about Shadows in the Mind’s Eye
I was fascinated as I read Janyre Tromp’s book. I love suspense thrillers and Shadows in the Mind’s Eye is set in an unique geographic area; the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas, around Hot Springs. Annie’s husband (and Rosemary’s dad) Sam is returning from his Navy service in the Pacific at the close of WWII. While Sam was overseas, his brother Peter and best friend “Doc” have been helping Annie care for the family’s peach orchard. But Sam has brought something else home with him that he didn’t have when he left. His terrible experiences have left him with what we know today is post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can manifest itself in unexpected moments.
Annie is different as well, since their baby daughter (who’s now three) was born after Sam deployed. So she’s been navigating life as a mom as well as working the farm (orchard). They’re overjoyed to see each other, but almost immediately Annie can see that Sam has changed. Will he be physically safe for Annie and Rosie to be around?
And Sam’s not only different physically. Annie’s afraid that he is literally losing his mind. He’s seeing things that no one else can see. Is it paranoia or something worse?
WHAT a story. Tromp is incredibly gifted at creating characters that readers will love and even feel concern for. And the situation the couple, and those they love (or those they fight with) find themselves in, is one that humans in our century still struggle with. Along with the emotional, psychological, and physical challenges Annie and Sam must endure is a mystery that Tromp drops little clues about throughout the book. It’s a mystery that is rooted in actual history that I was completely unaware of (and I won’t tell you the wheres and whys of that, lest I give you an unintentional spoiler!).
I especially love what the author says about her book:
“Fear is the great consumer. Sam is afraid he’s going crazy and that he can’t protect his family. Annie is afraid she won’t ever be able to cope and that the Sam she married is lost forever. And when they (or we) focus on fear, there are no solutions, no ways to move forward because they cannot solve fear on their own. We aren’t trustworthy enough or strong enough to fix it,” shares Tromp. “I’m a huge proponent of looking for and celebrating the beautiful even when it isn’t pretty. Gratitude isn’t a pretty bandage to slap on a hemorrhaging wound. It is a way to shift your attention while the master healer does his work. As Sam’s mother Dovie May says, ‘Sometimes God uses broken things to save us . . . Ain’t no light that can get through something solid. It sneaks through the broken places.’”–Janyre Tromp, about Shadows in the Mind’s Eye
Here is what I can say. I was captivated with Shadows in the Mind’s Eye. Tromp is a most exceptional storyteller and there was never a moment that I wasn’t drawn to keep turning pages. Wonderful characters; heartrending struggles; and beauty in the midst of ashes. I wholehearted recommend Shadows in the Mind’s Eye for lovers of history, suspense, and the struggles humans must face to move forward in life. I personally will be keeping an eye out for any and all of Janyre Tromp’s books. You will be, too!
