My thoughts about Not Since You

So, what does the title Not Since You express to you? I read it and think that there is something that happened in the past; that things or people don’t measure up to whatever or whoever was back in the land of memory. I feel a poignancy, and perhaps a sense of loss. SOMETHING is different, and not necessarily better, than what is missing. The book, with the smiling young woman covering her eyes, gives viewers a sense of expectancy. Why is she covering her eyes? And there’s a lovely, historic-ish building behind her. There’s another clue. But opening the book? It takes us somewhere back to the title; to the past, eight years in the past to be exact.

Claudia and Dorian have been best friends since he moved to town. Really, he is her dearest and best friend. And, middle/high school politics being what they are, Claudia thinks she is holding Dorian back. Maybe he could have his best life if she let him go, to the so-called popular crowds who clamor for his attendance and attention. But no, Dorian only has eyes for Claudia–literally! And he is ready to begin dating, to move their friendship to the land of romance.

But.

Then we pick up the story again, and eight years have gone by. Dorian is gone, and has been gone all that time. Claudia is signing the contracts for a retail space in one of those old buildings, so that she can open the warm but quirky candle and gift shop she’s been building towards by selling her creations at festivals and fairs. SO exciting, and evidence of how she has spent her years; creating, selling, branding, and building a solid business and a plan.

But the person that she has spent years avoiding is back in town (she doesn’t know it, but he hopes it’s for good) and knocking on her door. Dorian promised, years ago, that he would always be there for her. But after a tragedy that involved them both, he left. And yet her heart traitorously jumps to life in his presence, as if it’s been sleeping all the years that he has been gone. Apparently he never forgot her; and clearly she never forgot him.

Can Dorian win her back? At first, the answer seems to be a solid no. But he is determined; yet respectful. And there is a LOT going on besides just the two of them. A man who has been hounding Claudia since high school is still lurking, despite the fact that all she has ever said to him is “no.” Dorian’s mama is extremely ill. And there are some people in town who still haven’t forgiven Claudia and Dorian for the tragedy that still follows their names. Is picking up their relationship where they left off (sort of, anyway, with the addition of eight years of life tacked on the end) really something that can work?

You’ll have to read Dulcie Dameron’s Not Since You to find out! Neither Claudia nor Dorian is your typical romantic lead; yet the more I read the more I wished them well. Not Since You would be a lovely addition to your summer reading stack. And circling back to the book’s cover: it makes me smile that Claudia’s eyes are covered by her own hand. She really does not have any idea what’s coming!
