Her heart seeks safety. But will trouble find her even here?

After her sister’s marriage, Michelle Stiles is left hiding at Two Harts Ranch with the handsome but stubborn Zane Hart. She’s managed to stay one step ahead of her stepfather and his devious plans, but if he finds her, she will no longer be safe.

Zane has problems of his own. Having discovered a gold mine on his property, he must figure out how to harvest it without kicking off a gold rush. Michelle, educated and trained to run her father’s business, wants to manage all aspects of the mine, but Zane thinks for a person so smart she can have some misguided ideas. Running the mining operation will be a dangerous job, and he can’t risk putting her in harm’s way.

But danger finds Michelle anyway when she’s suddenly attacked. If they go to the sheriff, they’ll reveal her location, but if they do nothing . . . their troubles have only just begun.

My review of Inventions of the Heart

I adore Mary Connealy’s books. Her wit, ability to create wonderful adventures and appealing characters have charmed me since I read her first trilogies (Montana Marriages and Sophie’s Daughters) years ago.

In Inventions of the Heart, the second of Mary’s The Lumber Baron’s Daughters trilogy, we get to know Michelle Stiles (sister of Laura and Jilly). The three sisters are in hiding from their stepfather, who’d played a role to get the girls’ mother to fall in love with him and marry him. After that, his true abusive and greedy nature revealed itself. When the women discovered that he had, in effect, sold them off to unscrupulous men in marriage, they fled.

Now, Michelle is hidden at Zane Hart’s ranch in central California, where gold has just been discovered. The only problem (well, one of several problems, actually) is that Zane is a rancher. The last thing he wants, especially in a drought, is people who are crazy for gold trampling his pastures, ruining his water supply, and digging up his property. Uninvited. But you know how word spreads.

So Michelle and Zane are keeping the gold find a secret, and trying to figure out a way to get the gold out of the ground and put in the bank without anyone else discovering said secret. Fortunately, Michelle is an engineering genius; and if he’ll just let her, she can get that problem taken care of simply and quietly. At least the first part. But there’s still the issue of getting the gold safely into the bank; and more importantly, keeping Michelle safe from her stepfather.

I thoroughly enjoyed Inventions of the Heart! I love the Stiles sisters, who are all highly educated in an era when most women weren’t. Zane is a wonderful hero, as well. It was a delight to watch Zane get puzzled repeatedly as Michelle (an engineering genius) keeps making plan after plan to build improvements on his land. I loved the way that matters of faith and life get worked out in the characters’ lives, quite naturally and sweetly. Faith, love, family…and humor, the Mary Connealy way. Inventions of the Heart is a wonderful read. Don’t miss it!

Enjoy! –Wren

  1. I’m glad that you enjoyed this one! It’s always wonderful to read about how characters in historical settings find ways to exercise their own agency even with the limitations of the societies that they existed in– it’s interesting to hear that in this book, the Stiles sisters had the opportunity to receive an education and that this was drove their characters’ actions when most women weren’t at the time.
