My thoughts about this book

Plans within plans within plans.

An innocent (or perhaps not so innocent?) young woman. A former missionary kid who’s now a history prof teaching at one of Washington’s best-known universities. A senator who might be tapped as the next United States Secretary of State. They’re connected in ways that they don’t know yet; but a powerful and dangerous person is trying to discern that connection. And taking lives is something that the Wolf has never been squeamish about doing.

Author Sarah Hamaker’s book description–and setting–told me everything I needed to know about reading her book. I’ve been fascinated with Cold War fiction since I was in high school. And while we as a nation have moved on from that era on the world stage (supposedly, anyway!), those novels still intrigue me. And it continues to be easy to imagine that those who have treacherous secrets from those years–especially state secrets–would do anything to keep them secret.

Violet and Henry have stumbled into this world. Henry’s classes do cover the Cold War, but he never imagined that he’d actually become a pawn in a terrifying game of chess that involves spies, the Stasi, and their victims. And Violet? She’d just been doing her job, and in that befriending an old man in an assisted living facility. When Mr. Kopacek suddenly dies, Violet’s and Henry’s lives are thrown into a rollercoaster at high speed, following clues and events to try to figure out why they themselves are suddenly in danger.

But then, there’s the attraction that’s developing between the two of them. And there’s Violet’s family secret that she’s quite sure will drive away any potential suitors she’d become interested in. But more danger is ahead than they can imagine, and they’ll need each other to make it through. The main question is, however–will they make it through, alive?

Don’t miss this fantastic Cold War thriller. Sarah Hamaker weaves a fantastic tale of love, betrayal, danger, and the secrets of the past, which suddenly begin to affect the present. You won’t be able to put it down!

Enjoy!m –Wren

    • I am right there with you!! I can’t even tell you how consumed my imagination was with the Cold War and all its participants. But I really knew less about East Germany and its history. You made it fascinating and accessible. Looking forward to seeing more from you, Sarah! 😊
