“I Love You, Mom!” ~ a book review & giveaway (ends 3/25/22)

The BlogAbout Blogger Network sent me the most lovely and encouraging book for moms! I Love You, Mom! is a beautiful love note to mothers. I was so blessed and edified to read this book. And, I have a copy of the print book to give away to one FINCHNWREN reader. Keep reading for more, and for the opportunity to win!

About I Love You, Mom!

This precious book really is a love letter to moms. It includes beautiful artwork (in some of my favorite colors), Bible verses and devotional writings, prayers, and little notes on different subjects (these are written in a child’s voice, as if a mom’s child was writing notes of appreciation). It’s authored by daughter/mother writing team Blythe Daniel and Helen McIntosh. The book is subtitled “Cherished word gifts from my heart to yours,” and it really is just that!

Blythe and Helen have created a book that contains encouraging words that moms need to hear, along with Scriptures that will settle in mothers’ hearts and remind them both of God’s wonderful calling to them, along with His promises to always be with moms, working alongside them for His lifelong purposes. Devotional writings’ subjects include treasuring children; giving thanks; abundant love; confidence; regrets and affirmation; our time and attention; gifts and traditions; and much more. Each of these lovely chapters closes with wise and kind words of affirmation written in the child’s voice. How beautiful!

My thoughts about I Love You, Mom!

It touched my heart and my spirit so deeply! As I read this book, I felt many emotions. Although our son isn’t a little guy any more, I’m so grateful for the moments we’ve shared since his infancy, toddlerhood, and so on, all the way through his teen years. (Which are now officially concluded as he’s entered his twenties!) As I Love You, Mom! reminded me, God has held us all and loved us during every step of our lives.

And although this book paints a lovely picture of the mother & child life together, it’s also quite truthful. We do experience challenges in our family lives! We are not perfect people; we are loved humans who are endeavoring to create beautiful family experiences for our children. And sometimes we fail–in big ways or small ways. Yet our loving heavenly Father never gives up on us; never forgets us; never leaves us alone. And that’s a message that all moms need to hear.

I Love You, Mom! would be a fantastic gift for moms in any stage of the parenting life. It would be perfect for new moms, for Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day mom gifts, or really for any moment you’d like to bring a special gift to a mother. With its Scriptures and focus on a loving God who’s alongside mothers in every step of their journey, it’s something that women of faith would appreciate. Above all, these chapters provide moments where moms can take a breath, receive encouragement, and catch a glimpse of the vision of their best for their children’s lives. That’s definitely a gift that not every book can provide!

My thoughts

From the time I read The Hiding Place as a girl, I have loved and admired Corrie ten Boom. The Hiding Place‘s remarkable story of her life: her family’s protection of Dutch Jews; their Resistance work; Corrie’s time in the Ravensbruck concentration camp; this was an autobiography like none I’d ever read. Her faith and obedience were examples of some of the finest I’d ever read about, and still to this day, remain unequaled. Also, I love her face! I always thought I could see her great joy and love just by looking at her. (And, I’ve always thought she resembled my own grandmother, which makes me smile.)

So I felt thrilled to have the opportunity to review Corrie’s book, God is My Hiding Place. In this 40-day devotional book, readers can view Corrie’s own experiences, challenges, and difficulties; and by doing so, learn how her own faith, and holding tightly to God, brought her through everything. This book covers faith topics such as:

  • Worries, anxieties, fears, and casting our cares on the Father
  • Healing our broken hearts
  • Miraculous provision
  • God’s Word, and its beauty
  • Joy–especially when it feels there’s no joy to be found
  • Feeling like God has forgotten us
  • Our relationship to God, and staying close to Him

Corrie ten Boom was a woman who believed God; and, although she went through unimaginably painful suffering herself, trusted Him with her life. I will never forget learning of Betsie’s (Corrie’s beloved sister) urging of Corrie to be thankful for the fleas in their concentration camp barracks; and what God showed them as a result. Or, how Corrie embraced God’s love as a child, and how she never gave that up, even though she might have battled with Him in her prayers at Ravensbruck. (As anyone would!) The simplest ideas, which we can ourselves struggle with embracing (like not worrying, or being childlike in our faith, or believing that God Himself is enough, and is our sufficiency) were those Corrie embraced and lived out wholeheartedly. Despite the enormous trials she experienced!

One of my favorite Corrie stories is a moment when God brought her face to face with a former guard from Ravensbruck after the war; whom she remembered well. I won’t spoil the account by retelling it here, but over the years I’d forgotten its power. I had the blessing of reading it again in this devotional. What a spiritual truth! There are others equally as powerful, told here again (Corrie’s story of the air battle over her home city of Haarlem; the vitamin oil in the concentration camp; the many moments when she and Betsie prayed and were answered in the harshest of conditions), that will move readers’ hearts and bring tears to their eyes. And more that that, that will encourage believers to hold fast to the God who loves them (and who loved Corrie and Betsie), and who always delights in working in our lives.

God is My Hiding Place will encourage your heart and, I believe, enable you (as it has me) to want to step further into a closer walk with God; to believe Him to walk closely with you in response; and to know that in His hand is both security and joy for the believer. I recommend this beautiful book to you with joy myself, and with great hopes for the encouragement it will bring to you!

Enjoy God is My Hiding Place, and its opportunity to help you grow in your own faith! –Wren

“Purify My Heart” ~ a review

#sponsor #partner

Have you ever wished you could look in on a wise, wonderful woman’s walk with God? Recently, FrontGate Media sent me a copy of Isabelle Joye’s devotional/journal, entitled Purify My Heart: A Dialogue With Jesus. Suddenly, I had that opportunity! And it was wonderful and encouraging. Let me tell you about it!

About Purify My Heart

Purify My Heart: A Dialogue with Jesus started as Isabelle Joye’s own prayer journal. In it, she wrote her prayers and poured out her heart, her experiences, and what she felt God was saying to her in return, either in prayer or via the Bible, in both conversations and verses that she lists in each chapter. She wasn’t actually writing for human consumption, either! But she was moved to provide it for publishing (with some editing, and removal of others’ identifying names), after she saw a man say on Christian television that he’d understood from God in a vision that the world needed more Christian books, as many people do not read the Bible (my paraphrase).

Purify My Heart could be used in a number of ways. It has 52 chapters, so the reader could choose to read one per week. There are Scriptures centered around each devotional’s subject, plus written responses to Isabelle’s words/prayers that she felt she received from the Lord. There are questions posted at each chapter’s end to the reader, plus a page of journaling lines as well, so that the reader can answer the questions, write her (or his!) own thoughts, and record prayers.

I think that this could also be a sweet book to use as a family, during family devotionals. (Of course then, parents and children could use their own journals or notebooks to record their answers, as well as taking time to discuss what was just read.) But Purify My Heart is so intimate and dear that personal use of the book by an individual, might be the very best way.

The chapter subjects are many and varied, yet still seem to center on several topics; chiefly growing in relationship with Jesus, as well as in personal holiness and love for God. These topics are reflected in chapter titles. For example:

  • You Found Me
  • All Things Work Together for Good
  • Whittling
  • Forgiveness
  • My Creator
  • Pride
  • The Word
  • and many more!

My impressions–and the effect Purify My Heart had on me

What a lovely, impactful, yet gently challenging book. As I said in my first paragraph, I’ve wondered what a wise and godly woman’s inner life with the Lord might look like. Well, Purify My Heart opened my eyes to show me an intimate look at one woman’s walk with Christ. Although she probably wouldn’t say this, I had this reaction: Wow!

Isabelle very kindly shares her deepest struggles and indeed, some of her closest moments with the Lord with readers. She is open about her sins and what she would call her weaknesses. Again and again, she talks about her own life, holds it up to what she knows the Lord or His Word are asking of her, and confesses where she is wrong. Repeatedly, she expresses her love for the Lord, her desire to serve Him, and asks His help to become what He has planned for her.

I was so blessed to read this, even as I was challenged and convicted about my own life. I don’t spend a lot of time asking God to show my the error of my ways! My prayers are often more like, “Help!” or “Please lead me in this day,” or, as the extrovert that I am, “Please give me your words to say” (or write). Isabelle lays her soul and heart out before the Lord, agrees with Him about the truth, and blesses Him. Expresses her love for Him. Asks for His help to walk in a better way.

It truly astounded me. And it revealed a beautiful closeness that is available for the child of God. I really felt, as I read and after I read, closer to God, more desirous of wanting to be close to Him, and feeling His presence very near and dear to me.

That’s kind of an awesome outcome for a devotional!

About the author, Isabelle Joye

Isabelle Joye came to faith in Jesus Christ in 1973. (In fact, she talks a bit about that in this book!) Very soon after that, she got a concordance to go along with her Bible and noted what it said about the Bereans in Acts 17:11: “…they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” She was able to learn quickly and also discover if people were actually preaching what the Bible said. (I’m always a fan of those who seek to learn as the Bereans did!)

In Purify My Heart, she opens her journal to those who are interested, for the purposes of growth, edification, and understanding of what a walk with the Lord can be. What a blessing.

My thoughts

WHAT a book.

In Hope Amid the Pain: Hanging On to Positive Expectations When Battling Chronic Pain and Illness, author Leslie L. McKee shares Scriptures, her own experiences, kindness, and wisdom to comprise a 60-day journal that women who are struggling with long-term illness or pain can use to battle discouragement and hopelessness, to correct the wrong thinking (or simply, the lies of the enemy) that constant pain can bring; and to enable women to think on the love and care of God and His truths about them in their day-to-day challenges.

13 years ago, I’d never have imagined that I would someday need and be so incredibly blessed by (and equipped by!) this book. I’ve always been a busy (okay, some would say overly-scheduled) adult, happiest when I was involved in tons of activities and service. But some accidents and unexpected surgeries would sideline me for a bit. For many years, I was able to bounce right back into my much-loved and busy life. But the last three major surgeries and treatments (for very different things) left me healed (yay!) but I just didn’t bounce back quite the way I had before. And then, the pain started.

Suddenly I wasn’t able to be the Energizer Bunny. I had a lot of pain, fatigue, much less stamina. And yes, that offended me! Where was the old me that could go, go, go? I can’t tell you the shame and embarrassment I felt over that (along with the pain). I missed the old me and the extremely busy life that girl could live. And I had so many thoughts that McKee mentions in her book.

So, when the opportunity came to review Hope Amid the Pain, I seized it. And on the first day, when I read McKee’s introduction, I was struck by her words and wisdom; and by the fact that she KNOWS and UNDERSTANDS my struggles and my challenges. It made me cry! (A lot. My husband and son were super-compassionate but also surprised because I’m not much of a crier.) Finally, someone who’s walked a similar path to me. Someone who knows the thoughts that have overwhelmed me, and the lies of the enemy that have discouraged me, because she also has lived this. But McKee was led to write this fantastic devotional, one that speaks the truth about constant pain or illness, but then helps the reader to remember and grab on to God’s truths and to regain hope. In her 60-day journal, she provides helpful instruction, supportive Scripture, and questions posed so that the reader can stop and think, be grateful, and hold on to hope.

Here are some of my favorites among McKee’s writings:

  • “…Pain is a thief. It steals your time and productivity…But it doesn’t steal your true identity.”
  • “Paul is encouraging us in this verse to fix our thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. In doing so, we can erase the lies the enemy tries to make us believe about ourselves.”
  • “When I look back, I can see that God has always been there….He redirected me and gave me hope when I thought there was none.”
  • “”The LORD will work out His plans for my life–for your faithful love, O LORD, endures forever.” (Psalm 138:8)
  • “Be gentle and patient with yourself.”
  • “While your plans may have been changed as a result of…pain…, His calling on your life has not….It’s never too late to begin expecting His goodness in your life. You are valuable and precious to Him.”

I encourage you, if any of this resonates with you today, to find a copy of this book and engage with it. (Enter the giveaway, too!) Leslie L. McKee’s words will encourage you, remind you that you ARE valuable, and help you to embrace hope and joy. It is wonderful.

Enjoy! –Wren

“The Wonder of Creation” ~ a fantastic new kids’ devotional (review & giveaway, ends 12/6/21)

#sponsor #partner

Momentum Influencer Network and HarperCollins Christian Publishing were kind enough to send me Louie Giglio’s fantastic new kids’ devotional book, The Wonder of Creation: 100 More Devotions About God and Science. It has been a delight to read; and I have a copy to share with one reader!

About The Wonder of Creation

Louie Giglio has written a number of books for children. This brand-new devotional shows kids God’s greatness, love, and creativity as they are illuminated in science. In The Wonder of Creation, Giglio tells kids about cool science in the earth, in space, in animals, and in people as he shares God’s Word and God’s care for us. Each of the 100 devotions includes a Bible verse, a reading about a little-known science fact, a prayer, a sidebar with more neat info, and vivid illustrations. Written especially for ages 6-10, each devotion is designed not only to captivate kids with science, but also with the God who designed and created everything.

And there is so much to find in this book! Giglio and his co-writer, Tama Fortner, do an excellent job of bringing interesting science facts to a child audience while including verses about the God who designed and created everything. Some of my own favorites included:

  • The octopuses’ garden in Monterey Bay
  • How geodes (LOVE them!) are made and where you can find the biggest one ever
  • NASA’s PUFFER robot, which was inspired by origami
  • Why a person has straight, wavy, or curly hair
  • Why the land on Jupiter’s moon Io could feel like a roller coaster
  • How ducks stay dry
  • And more!

Giglio doesn’t only include cool facts, however. He weaves the Word of God in with each one, and shows how God’s hand created all these amazing things in the physical world, whether it’s here on earth or in space. And how the mind of God thought of all of them. He also shows us how we can even get to know God better as we learn about what He has created.

Some of my favorite verses Giglio uses are:

  • How God’s mercies never end and are new every morning, despite our mistakes, imperfections, or sins (Lamentations 3:22-23)
  • How God chose us to be different than the world, via John 15:19, using the example of orange Bengal tigers and the rarer white Bengals
  • Proverbs 15:3-“The Lord’s eyes see everything that happens.”….even our hair follicles and how their shape makes our hair look a certain way!
  • The many zones of the sea and the specific things that go on in each of them…and remembering who made the sea (Psalm 95:5) and owns it

In addition, there is also a downloadable Parents’ Discussion Guide for The Wonder of Creation. It includes each devotion’s Bible verse plus 3 questions that the parent can ask their children after they read. They’re not “test” questions, but more open-ended questions that ask the child’s opinions about what’s described in each devotion, how they see Jesus or people responding, and even for fun ideas. It’s a great complement to the book and will bless both parents and kids with connection moments with each other and Scripture.

This book is written with such joy; and it was a joy for me to read! In my son’s younger years, we delighted in exploring science and seeing God’s hand in and behind it. That always gave us greater awe for the Lord and His incredible creativity…as well as giving us a love for creation (especially space! and the ocean!) that is still very much alive in us today. I delighted in reading The Wonder of Creation, and I joyfully recommend it to you! It would be a fantastic addition to any kid’s library.

This is a book that you could use in your bedtime routine with your kids; that they could read on their own; or that could be utilized in homeschools. It would also be a fun addition to morning devotional times. It’s just a fantastic devotions book, overall!

My thoughts about Live on Purpose

I thoroughly enjoyed Sadie Robertson Huff’s (with Tama Fortner) devotional. It is such an encouraging book. And I have to admit to you: I read it more as a book than as a devotional! Meaning, I sat down, opened the book to its first devotional, “On Purpose and With a Purpose,” and read from there. Of course, I also used it as a devotional on given days, but reading it in chunks enabled me to see some of its overall aim: to connect readers not only WITH God, but with His incredible purpose for our lives. Isn’t that an amazing thought, that He has a calling into life with Him for each of us, but then also, amazing work that we can do with our lives as we flow with Him?

Sadie has a good grip on these ideas, and she communicates them so kindly and lovingly to the reader. She starts each devotional page with a Scripture, then talks about how we can believe it and act upon it in our lives. She also reminds us that God is good. Period! With the struggles and challenges life hands us at times, sometimes we can be tempted to believe the opposite, which our enemy would love to see happen.

Over and over, Sadie uses Scripture, snippets from her books, and moments from her own life to remind us that God is so good, loves us so deeply, and has an awesome plan for our lives. All we have to do is answer His invitation…and then go on the adventure with Him. He may call us to do what we feel are impossible things. Sadie reminds us that yes, they might be impossible…but never for God, who’s at work in us to act!

Live on Purpose is a wonderful book, and a devotional with an important message for people today: “You matter. God loves you so much. And He has an incredible life He’s inviting you to.” That is so different from the messages we get from the world (or from social media). It’s something everyone needs to hear!

Hi everyone! I have a fantastic kids’ devotional giveaway for you today: Levi Lusko’s Roar Like a Lion. I received a copy of this book from Momentum Influencer Network; and they’re going to give away a copy to one reader as well!

About Roar Like a Lion

This devotional is written for kids aged 6-10 from a Christian perspective. Co-written by pastor Levi Lusko and Tama Fortner, it encourages kids to embrace courage, remain hopeful, build their own faith, and, as the book says so beautifully on the back cover, “Understand how you are a part of God’s great story.” There are 90 devotional readings contained in a 192-page hardcover book, sized just right for kid hands (6 1/2″ x 8 1/4″). It’s illustrated by Catherine Pearson.

Each devotional starts with a title. Then, the Bible verse is listed. Next, the authors share how the verse could apply to kid life (in situations with siblings, parents, peers, friends, the world at large, or in their own choices). The devotional ends with simple prayers. Also, there are sidebars on the right which tell an anecdote or story, or summarize events from the Bible which relate to what kids have just read. These are entitled “Get Ready to Roar!” or “Did You Know?”

What you’ll read inside

You’ll find thoughtful, gently and kindly-written words that are just right for kids to read to themselves. (Of course, this could also be read by kids and parents together, in the morning or just before bed.) The authors know what it’s like to be kids, and to face issues that they face, because (of course) they were kids once themselves! Levi Lusko also is the parent of several children. So armed with day-to-day life experience, years of pastoring, and the Bible, they offer clear explanations of Bible verses and how they really do apply to kids’ daily experiences.

The writing is warm and clearly written in a caring manner, so that kids and readers know the authors understand what it’s like to face a world and situations that are beyond kids’ experiences; and that the Bible have loving and helpful words to apply. Verses that kids will remember or can memorize.

And, I have to mention the artwork! As you saw above, the cover art is breathtaking. I thought of stained-glass windows, while my son thought of origami-type paper art. (I think we’re both right!) Inside the book, under each title, you’ll find art that illustrates each particular devotional. Those echo again the collage/paper feeling of the cover art. They’re cheerful and wonderful. I even was reminded of one of my own favorite illustrators of children’s books and her work, Lois Lenski. Kids and parents will love the art, which takes each topic and brings it to life vividly.

So what are some kid life challenges that readers will discover here? Here are some of the topics:

  • Even kids can be leaders
  • God loves us and speaks to us
  • School days that are tough
  • What to do when you don’t know how to proceed
  • Fears
  • How God sees us
  • And one of my own cherished phrases: “But God…”
  • and more!

I particularly loved how Lusko wove the story of Jesus and Jairus and the woman who touched Jesus’s robe so she could be healed, into an illustration of how we might feel when we are interrupted…and how Jesus dealt with the same thing. Or about our habits, and Jesus’s habits! Or, how seemingly impossible situations were worked out by our “But God…” God. Over and over, devotionals are presented that will help kids know that God loves them and holds them close, and is so ready to lead and guide them always.

I had many favorite passages in this book. But I wanted to show you one of my top faves:

God never will leave us. And He will NEVER break His promises.

That’s an exceptional word for all of us, whether we’re kids or adults!

And…some Roar Like a Lion freebies from the publisher!

This devotional is so wonderful. But sometimes, we as parents might not know how to approach spiritual discussions with our kiddos. Here are some free resources for you from the publisher; a “Parent Discussion Guide,” and a guide to “Four Rhythms to Setting the Pace in Your Home.” Both of these are free downloads that you can save and print from the links below.

1. Parent Discussion Guide

Teaching kids about the Bible can be hard. Taking concepts like heaven, and hope, and loss, and faith, and boiling them down into digestible bite sizes for kids is challenging!

This guide is built as a tool to accompany the book, and to help your family discuss Roar Like a Lion together. Each day you’ll find a few questions that will help you dig deeper into what your child is discovering.

My prayer is that Roar Like a Lion will ignite your child’s heart and imagination to know and love Jesus! And that is my prayer for you, too.

2. Four Rhythms to Setting The Pace of Your Home.

Your calendar is chaotic, your days loud, and your seasons busy. I see you. I feel that.

Maybe you feel like the madness of life is clouding the calling on your home. Like you just can’t pinpoint the priorities. Maybe you’ve found yourself wondering…

  • Is “balance” even possible?
  • Is parenting ever not chaotic?
  • Will I always feel overbooked, under-rested, and too busy?

The truth is, there is a God-ordained rhythm that He wants us to set out our lives to. There is a built-in beat. There is a cadence. There is an ebb and flow to how He wants our lives to go.

Find the encouragement you need to set a sustainable pace in this free download.

Introducing the gorgeous Ellie Claire 365-Day Devotional Journals~A Review and Giveaway! (CLOSED)

#sponsored

CONGRATULATIONS TO WINNER CAROL E!

I imagine that this is a BUSY time of year for you.  Wouldn’t it be wonderful if you had a few moments to simply rest, reflect, and read some thoughtful devotional and Scriptures?  Thanks to Worthy Publishing and their division Ellie Claire, I have just the thing to share with you…and even a giveaway for one person to win!  Ellie Claire generously sent me three of their lovely new journals to use and review.  One of these will be gifted to a FINCHNWREN reader, just in time to jump-start 2019!  The journals are entitled: Peace Begins with Me; Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus; and The Earth is the Lord’s and Everything in It.  Let me tell you more, and show you!

The Ellie Claire 365-Day Devotional Journals provide a place each day for readers to quiet a heart, think upon the Lord, and dwell on Scriptures and the Lord.  Each devotional is organized around a theme or idea.  The covers of the journals are vividly and gorgeously illustrated, and the books have an elastic band to hold the books closed (as well as an attached ribbon bookmark).  Inside, you’ll find pages for entries on each one of the 365 days of the year.  Each page begins with a quote of some kind, followed by a devotional writing.  Scripture verses are included, as well as blank lined sections at the end, for the reader to jot down thoughts, prayers, and ideas.

Peace Begins with Me

Peace Begins with Me has a lovely green/blue/white watercolor wash cover, with a golden title.  The inside is just as restful and pretty, containing white pages with green borders and a clear, readable font.  This journal’s theme is, of course, peace; specifically, gaining peace for ourselves by learning, knowing, and dwelling with the Prince of Peace Himself, Jesus.  Each page begins with a verse of Scripture that directs our attention to God, and explores who He is.

Who is Jesus?  In Peace Begins with Me, we’re reminded that He is:

  • The Lamb, whose glory lights the New Jerusalem
  • The One who gives us strength in suffering
  • The Maker of heaven and earth
  • The One who calms the storm
  • and more!

Some of my favorite devotional passages from this journal include the following:

“God, however, is not like us. He is not limited in what He can see and do. God sees full scope and far range, from an unhindered perspective. His view is not hampered by a cluttered past or the baggage of sin or the clouds of fear. We cannot even imagine what is known to Him in a glance. But we can ask and we can seek, and in Him we shall find.” (September 12)

“We human beings often talk about God’s will. When life is going well, we totally support the Lord’s plan for us. When the road gets bumpy or flat-out painful, we’re confused at best, despairing at worst, and hardly able to believe that the Almighty’s will is good or perfect….To be specific, our God is mighty to save you from death and gracious to redeem your life…” (December 5)

I love a lot about this particular journal.  What I Iove the most is how it takes me out of my day-to-day routine and points me at an aspect of God that perhaps I’ve forgotten about.  As a busy homeschool mom of a high school junior, my days are filled with a LOT.  Training my son, teaching him upper-level subjects, supervising the classes he takes online; and getting out of the way so that he can develop skills and become more and more the person he’s meant to be.  My daily prayers are focused on that, on my husband and family, on strength so that I can manage my day and responsibilities well.  But over and above all that is the God who loves me and my family; who has amazing purposes, and is working out things I can’t even imagine.  To move my focus to Him?  Yes, it really does bring peace.

Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus

From the title of Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus — if you’ve ever sung from a hymnal before — you might surmise that this journal’s theme centers on quotes from hymns.  If you did, you’d be correct!  Each page begins with a line from a hymn (or a praise and worship song), that tells us something about God and His character.  Then, the devotional develops that idea more fully, followed by Bible verses to read.  The pages close with lines for journaling.

If you are someone who loves worship music (both old and new), you will love this journal.  I personally love the old hymns for what they show us about God.  Newer worship songs do the same, in different ways.  Here are some of the lovely words found in Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus:

From August 21’s entry:

“Broader than the scope of my transgressions, greater far than all my sin and shame, O magnify the precious name of Jesus, praise His name!” –“Wonderful Grace of Jesus,” Haldor Lillenas

“Fortunately, as believers we know the battle for our souls has been won.  Jesus, the Son of God, understood the threat of sin, waged war against the enemy, and rose victorious over sin and the grave.”

Or, another great reading, from March 3:

“He bled, He died to save me; and not alone the gift of life, but His own self He gave me.” –“I’ve Found a Friend, Such a Friend,” James G. Small

“Times of adversity reveal who our true friends are.  The good news is, you never have to wonder with Jesus; He is always a friend.  A friend to those who feel friendless–the Companion who endures with you through loss and sadness.  In fact, He is more than a friend–He is Savior and Lord.”

I love Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus.  Beautifully, it reminds me of all the steps in my journey of faith; from my grandmother singing hymns in her kitchen, to my days at camp where I first heard the gospel, to my time as a missionary and even my current life, as it reminds me of God in all His glory and goodness.  How amazing to remember that God is at work, has been at work, and always will be at work in us all!

The Earth Is the Lord’s, and Everything In It

The Earth Is the Lord’s, and Everything In It journal pages begin with a Bible verse.  Then, the authors connect that verse to a particular aspect of creation, or to one of their own experiences in nature.  (You can tell that these coauthors have spent a lot of time enjoying and experiencing the great outdoors!)  Each page then ends with a short prayer and blank lines to journal in, along with corner decorations of colorful peacocks and flowers.

Have you ever experienced God through the riches of creation?  As Romans 1 reminds us, “ For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—His eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen…”  Perhaps you’ve taken your family camping and marveled at meteor showers or constellations in the night sky, away from the bright lights of the city.  Or, maybe you’ve taken a walk when a light snow is falling, and felt the quiet and hush as you’ve trodden the snowy ground.  Or, delighted in the roar of the waves on beach trips.  This book will take you through these experiences and more, and remind you of the God whose hand is behind them and in them, speaking to you through His creation and Scriptures.

Some of my favorite passages include:

“Likewise, God is a compass for our lives.  When we face important decisions, He will guide us if we will listen—“Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it.'”  (Isaiah 30:21), from November 16

“I shall give you rains in their season, so that the land will yield its produce and the trees of the field will bear their fruit.”  (Leviticus 16:4) “Even as a child I saw the difference between what I could offer and what God could do…I’ve not forgotten the lessons learned in Dad’s garden…”  from March 17

BELOVED Devotional for Young Women Review & Giveaway (CLOSED)

#sponsored #partner

CONGRATULATIONS TO WINNER AMY W!

Are you looking for a new devotional for young women?  FlyBy/Propeller Promotions kindly sent me Lindsay A. Franklin’s newest book, Beloved: 365 Devotions for Young Women to review.  It has been a pleasure and an encouragement to read and use this book in my own daily Bible reading times.  And I’ll be able to share a copy of Beloved with one FINCHNWREN reader, because FlyBy also provided a copy for me to give away!

About Beloved

Have you ever wished you had all the Bible information about women all in one place?

If so, you will love Beloved!

Beloved is Lindsay A. Franklin’s newest devotional for young women.  It contains a full year’s worth of daily devotionals (yes, 365!) in a beautiful hardback book that’s sized at just over 7″ x 5″.  It’s sturdy and has a nice heft, but it’s just right for holding or opening up in a lap or on a desk.  The pages are a creamy white with black text, a lovely pink, green, and yellow floral border, and journaling lines at the bottom of each page.  And, its subject matter is perfect for young women (but really, women of all ages will love it).

Franklin has delved deeply into the Bible and has drawn out the life stories and experiences of about 60 biblical women, both named and unnamed.  Then, she penned devotionals with life direction, lessons, and Scriptures that young (and older!) women can learn from.  The stories and choices Franklin explores are not just the good and beautiful ones, interestingly enough; because we can learn not only from women’s positive choices, but the negative ones, as well.

In Beloved, you’ll find meditations on the lives of many women, including:

  • Rebekah, Rachel, and Leah
  • Delilah
  • Jael
  • Shiphrah and Puah
  • Rahab
  • Hannah
  • Naomi, Orpah, and Ruth
  • Abigail
  • The Shunammite woman
  • and so many more, including meditations on the Proverbs 31 woman!

While this book is designed with a reading for each day of the year, I often read several pages at a time for the purposes of this review.  I found my reading times so rich, beautiful and encouraging.  Each daily devotional is tied to a verse (or collection of verses) of Scripture.  So, it’s very easy to turn to those verses and read an entire Bible section or chapter to get the expanded story of the women being discussed, alongside the devotional passage.  Each day’s reading is concise yet still full of wisdom and understanding.  Franklin is able to, quite effectively, connect these ancient women’s experiences to the things we need to know and live by in our own present day.

Some of my favorite readings…

…came from most unexpected places.  Like these words, about Lot’s wife:

“We never get to hear words directly from Lot’s wife in the Bible.
She doesn’t have one line of dialogue, so it’s hard to know who she might have been.
But, because of her ultimate end, she has gone down in history as an example of
what happens when we look backward instead of forward.”  (p. 43)

But I also loved these words about Sarah (Abraham’s wife), whom we’d consider a better example than Mrs. Lot:

“We can draw strength from examples like Sarah’s story. She wasn’t perfect
in her patience or in her belief that God would follow through for her,
but we don’t tend to be perfect in those areas either. We have the benefit
of being able to see Sarah’s whole story, many millennia later, and so we can
easily understand that God works out his will in his timing. It takes strength
to be patient, but letting God’s plan unfold is always worth the wait.” (p. 35)

Or, these beautiful words drawn from the life of Samuel’s mother, Hannah:

“The long-term solution is to understand that we aren’t created for comparison.
You were created with unique gifts to use, particular trials to overcome, and
specific triumphs to celebrate. When you embrace your own path and avoid
falling into the comparison trap, you can find contentment, as well as the
motivation to be the very best you possible.”  (p. 198)

For many years, I spent much of my Bible study time on the Epistles, Psalms, or Proverbs.  Sometimes it’s comforting (and instructive) to read the actual instructions that the Bible has for us.  However, it can be just as rich and absolutely as valuable for us to observe the lives, choices, mistakes, and faithfulness of different Bible persons.  Beloved is wonderful to read; to stop and take some time each day, and to look at these ancient women.  If we stop for a moment, to look, read, and pray, we can grow and become more equipped in wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and maturity as we seek to follow Christ.  Definitely check this book out.  It is so worth your time, and worth the time of the young women you parent and mentor!

The Spirit of God Illustrated Bible (for kids) ~ Review and Giveaway (Ends 9/28/18)

#sponsored

Hi friends!  Are you interested in great devotional Bibles and Bible stories to share with your children and family?  FlyBy/Propeller Promotions sent me a free copy of Zonderkidz’ new The Spirit of God Illustrated Bible to use and review.  And, I’ll be giving away another copy to one reader at the end of this post!

About The Spirit of God Illustrated Bible

Written by Doris Wynbeek Rikkers and gorgeously illustrated by Fernando Juarez, this colorful book of Bible stories based on Scriptures includes verses and accounts from both the New and Old Testaments.  In total, there are 40 different Bible stories!  Each one starts with a verse that describes what God or the Holy Spirit are doing, and the biblical reference for the story.  Here’s a sampling of what you’ll find in this book, first from the Old Testament:

  • The Spirit Makes All Things New Again
  • The Spirit’s Gift to Joseph
  • The Spirit Inspires Bezalel
  • The Spirit Prepares Others to Help Moses
  • The Spirit Changes Saul into a Leader
  • God’s Spirit Speaks Through David

And, from the New Testament, you’ll find:

  • Simeon Sees Through the Eyes of the Spirit
  • The Spirit Comes Like a Dove
  • Jesus Makes a Promise
  • The Spirit Takes Philip Away
  • The Holy Spirit Fills Saul
  • The Fruit of the Spirit
  • and tons more!

This hardback book is sturdy and the illustrations and pages inside are very glossy and eye-catching.

What I thought about The Spirit of God Illustrated Bible

First, I love the illustrations.  They are gorgeous, colorful, full of life and fun.  They really bring the Bible stories and characters to life in an exciting and interesting way; for adults as well as children.  I really enjoy Fernando Juarez’s art.

I really liked the Bible stories the author chose to use.  We’re familiar, of course, with Adam and Eve or Joseph and his dreams.  But what about Simeon?  Jahaziel?  Ezekiel?  Zechariah the priest?  Or Philip, in the book of Acts?  These are fantastic people whose interactions with God our children might not know about, and they are great additions to this illustrated story Bible.

The stories are bite-sized and don’t contain a lot of text (although the important factors are mentioned) so they would be great for reading aloud to little children, or for devotional times with the whole family before bed (or at any other time).  It would also be a fantastic addition to a children’s Sunday school class.

I like that the book is about the Holy Spirit and His interaction with people throughout human history (well, at least, biblical history).  We learn a lot over the courses of our Christian lives about God and Jesus.  But the Holy Spirit is often the less-seen, unnamed person of the Trinity who is still active and at work.  It is a great reminder that God is at work; and that the Holy Spirit has an important purpose!
