My thoughts

What a charming little Easter board book! Author Bonnie Rickner Jensen and illustrator Julie Sawyer Phillips have created a lovely, musically-rhymed book that uses Dayspring lamb (or sheep) Really Woolly and his friends as they celebrate Easter, Jesus, and the joys of spring and new beginnings. The board book is die-cut to resemble an Easter basket, with colorful drawings. Each pair of board-book pages contains a title, a Bible verse, a poem, and a prayer, with Really Woolly and his animal friends depicting each one.

What are the thoughts that this book communicates to its tiny readers (or families, as parents read this book to their children)? First, that these big thoughts about God, life, and the earth and its inhabitants are ideas that little ones can understand and take hold of. Communicated lovingly in the animals’ sweet expressions matched with the Bible verses and poems, the pages will delight little readers, even as they plant the Bible’s beauty and truth in their hearts. The book’s big idea, Easter, is communicated in part by the colorful Easter eggs tucked into hidden spots on each page, but also by the path the pages travel; through the joys of spring, rain, new beginnings, growing, Easter, and finally, Jesus, who brings us the joy in our hearts.

Some of my favorite parts

There are some precious parts of Really Woolly My First Easter that I loved, and wanted to share with you! So many things will make this board book the perfect addition to an Easter basket, or for a treat for families to read on Easter. Here are some that delighted me!

First, the shape of the book itself! The die-cut “handle” of the board book is the perfect size for children to tuck their fingers in and hold, just as if it were a real basket.

Second, I loved how the artist placed (so to speak) Easter eggs everywhere! Not just real eggs but items that show what this book is celebrating. I’ll bet you can pick out several on these pages, but I have to point out my favorite. The mice rolling the Easter egg in the lower right reminded me so much of what the verses above it say: that the angel came to roll away the stone from Jesus’ tomb. Wonderful words illustrated again in the art!

The last page in the book takes all the big ideas Really Woolly My First Easter shares with its readers and makes them personal; that little ones can experience daily joy in their hearts (as can everyone else) because Jesus has made us all new. Wonderful!

Don’t miss the chance to enter the Instagram giveaway linked above so that you can win a copy of Really Woolly My First Easter for your little ones. They will love it!

Enjoy! –Wren

In honor of Easter, the FINCHNWREN blog is giving away a sweet silver-tone necklace representing the Bible verse from Matthew 17:20. The key moment in this verse is as follows, when Jesus says:

  • “…Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”

I have loved this verse since I was a little girl! I may not always have faith in God to move in a given situation but this beautiful verse reminds me that amazing things can happen with even a tiny bit of faith!

“Easter Stories”…just in time for Easter

I’ve had the opportunity to read and review a wonderful book, just in time for Easter.

Easter Stories pic

Easter Stories~Classic Tales for the Holy Season is a nice, thick book (370 pages!).  It’s full of 27 wonderful stories for the Easter season from various authors of the Christian tradition.  In this book, you’ll find authors like C.S. Lewis, Maxim Gorky, Walter Wangerin Jr., Oscar Wilde, the Brothers Grimm, and others you might never have heard of, but whose writings will bless and encourage you and your family.  Here is a sampling of the stories you’ll encounter here:

  • Jane Tyson Clement’s The White Lily tells of a radiant lily, given to a grumpy, dirty father, and how it transforms his household and family
  • Oscar Wilde’s The Selfish Giant; a story that’s familiar to many of us but which merits a beautiful inclusion here
  • The account of a transformational experience in a South African church, recounted by Alan Paton in The Church of the Washing of the Feet
  • in Checkov’s The Student, a young man’s encounters over the course of an evening open epiphany to him
  • My personal favorite, How Donkeys Got the Spirit of Contradiction, by Andre’ de Trocme’; one person’s imaginings of a Samaritan’s donkey who met the Holy Family.
  • And 22 other wonderful tales to stir your spirit and open your heart to see and experience Easter

I personally love fiction for the purposes of revealing truth.  I think that, in prose, an author can express so much more than in nonfiction; perhaps that when our souls have to ponder and seek, we understand more.  All the authors of these excellent Easter tales are able to accomplish just that.   You’ll walk away after reading them thankful!

Easter Stories can be used as personal devotional reading, (in many cases) as a family read-aloud, and would be a wonderful addition to any family’s bookshelf.  I recommend it for your celebration of Easter!

And, you have the chance to win a copy for yourself!  Just enter the Rafflecopter form below!

Egglo Entertainment–A TOS Crew Review

One of our newest TOS Crew reviews is a very unusual one…but so beautiful and meaningful for the upcoming Easter season!

Our Egglo review items

Our Egglo review items

Egglo Entertainment graciously provided us with several of their wonderful products for us to use and review. We received Glow in the Dark Egglo Eggs, The Egg-cellent Easter Adventure Book, Egglo Treasure Scripture Scrolls, Egglo Bible Verse Stickers, and the Egglo Glow in the Dark Hunt Event Curriculum.  (We received a digital copy of the curriculum, but physical ones for everything else.)  What a wealth of Easter blessings!

Egglo Entertainment ReviewEgglo Entertainment creator Darcie Cobos had a vision for creating a marvelous Easter experience for children that really underlined Easter’s true meaning; the resurrection of Jesus Christ and His provision of salvation for all through that death and resurrection.  The ideas for Egglo eggs grew out of her church’s children’s event, where children hunted for Easter eggs in the dark with flashlights.  This illustrated the Bible verse which became crucial to Egglo Entertainment’s mission and products:  John 1:5  “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”  Ms. Cobos wanted a way for children to see the light of Jesus in and throughout all the trappings and events of Easter.  With her Egglo Entertainment products, she’s fully achieved that aim!

Egglo Glow in the Dark Easter Eggs

Egglo Glow in the Dark Easter Eggs

Glow in the Dark Egglo Eggs

The Glow in the Dark Egglo Eggs are plastic eggs, created with special technology that causes the eggs to glow after being exposed to light (sunlight, black light, fluorescent or light bulbs all work) for 30 to 45 minutes.  These eggs are completely nontoxic and safe for children to use.  They come in pink, yellow, green and blue, and several of the colors have raised crosses on them, while the others are plain.

Egglo eggs, pre-activation

Egglo eggs, pre-activation

We used fluorescent bulbs to activate the eggs.  I placed them on a paper plate and left them under the light for about 2 hours.  (The directions say you only need 30 minutes under fluorescent bulbs, but I wanted to be extra sure!)  They were definitely glowing after their time under the light!  Here’s a photo of the glow in the dark effects:

Egglo Entertainment ReviewThe glow lasts well for an hour, then dissipates little by little over the next two to three hours.  And, the eggs’ light can be reactivated over and over, just by placing them under light again.

The Egglo eggs....both open and closed

The Egglo eggs….both open and closed

You can probably tell by the photos that there is a seam in the Egglo eggs which you can open.  This is wonderful for adding prizes for egg hunts, or little candies as treats for the children to find when they open the eggs.  In fact, we even received some amazing products to go in them!

Egglo Treasures Scripture Scrolls

Egglo Treasures Scripture Scrolls

Egglo Treasures Scripture Scrolls

The Egglo Treasures Scripture Scrolls are the coolest little things.  Each bag contains 12 Scripture Scrolls, all of which are bound together by tiny rubber bands.  When you remove the rubber bands, children can unroll the scrolls to reveal Bible verses based on 10 different Scriptures.

An unrolled Scripture Scroll

An unrolled Scripture Scroll

Children LOVE unrolling the scrolls, and they’re nice and sturdy.  And they fit beautifully into the Egglo eggs.  Scripture Scrolls play a major role in The Egg-cellent Easter Adventure storybook as well, so they’re a wonderful tie-in.

Egglo Bible Verse Stickers

Egglo Bible Verse Stickers

Egglo Bible Verse Stickers

These Egglo Bible Verse Stickers are small, rectangular and white and each contains a picture of a scroll with a Bible verse on it.  They look just like the scrolls in both The Egg-cellent Easter Adventure and the Egglo Treasures Scripture Scrolls.  Each package contains 12 stickers with references from the same 10 verses included in the Scripture Scrolls.  And these fit beautifully into the Egglo eggs as well.

Egglo Entertainment ReviewThe Egg-cellent Easter Adventure

Yet another excellent item we reviewed was Darcie Cobos’ storybook, The Egg-cellent Easter Adventure.  This wonderful book contains a delightful and instructive Narnia-esque story with vivid illustrations.  We chose to read it aloud together, and the first portion was so wonderful that we decided to split up the reading over a 3-day period.

Three children (Hardy and Ana, siblings, and their cousin Pascal) are being somewhat wild in the family’s kitchen.  Fussing, pushing, and running around. Their parents send them off to play…and in the attic they discover a treasure chest with a glowing, floating Easter egg!

The three are transported to different locations in the world…ancient Egypt, Easter Island, and someplace very special.  Along the way, they learn the truths of Scripture that they need to apply to their own lives and relationships.  They also see how God leads them and about John 3:16; how God gave His only Son so that all who believe in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.

It was the most wonderful read-aloud…and so perfect for Easter time.  It really does teach children about how Scripture can instruct them and teach them not only in its big truths, but in ways it can change our daily behavior.  I think we’ll return to it again, with great delight!

Egglo Entertainment Review

The Egglo Glow in the Dark Egg Hunt Event Curriculum

The last item we received was a digital copy of The Egglo Glow in the Dark Egg Hunt Event Curriculum.  This 60-page curriculum guide will tell you how to run your own Egglo event, whether it’s at church, at a ministry event, or children’s program.  (It can even be adapted for use in your own home!)

Here are some of the wonderful components of this guide:

  • Event planning tips and instructions
  • Easter treat recipes
  • Games and craft ideas
  • Decorating tips
  • Devotionals, Scripture readings and large group activities
  • Coloring pages and printables
  • And more!

If you’re looking for specific ways to plan an event, whether it’s in your own home or at a larger venue, Darcie Cobos’ curriculum will help you plan a Christ-centered Easter celebration for children that they will adore!

In closing:

Our family REALLY loved the Egglo products.   Here’s what my son has to share:

“In the book, it seemed like God’s hand was taking the kids from here and there to where He put them just where He wanted them to be.  I did enjoy reading the book.  The eggs are very fun and they glow very nicely.”

Personally, I believe that Egglo Entertainment has created a fun and faith-filled way for children to experience the truths of Jesus in Easter.  Any family and church could use these products to bring Scriptural truths to life for their children.  And they’re encouraging for adults as well!

Enjoy!  –Wren
