“Room 1010” ~ a review & giveaway of an incredible story of a little girl & answered prayer (ends 11/26/22)

*this is a sponsored post*

Here’s a wonderful book that will encourage you and remind you of the miracles of prayer, as mom Billye Survis and cowriter Brenda E. Cortez tell the story of Billye’s daughter Elynn’s accident. It’s a remarkable story told with honesty (and all the mom feelings you’d imagine) by the pair. I received a copy of this sweet book from the author and FrontGate Media. Here’s more about the book, plus a giveaway you can enter to win Room 1010 for yourself!

About the book

When Elynn Survis was ten years old, she and her brother Ethan were riding their bikes in their neighborhood when a freak accident occurred. She was brought home, but her symptoms worsened and Elynn was taken to a children’s hospital and admitted–during the height of Covid-19, when only one family member could accompany her inside. It became clear that surgery was necessary to repair the traumatic injury–surgery which could leave her with lifelong health issues and complications. Or is there another way?

Room 1010 is the story of how people around the world were rallied to pray for this little girl–in a remarkable and miraculous true story. Coauthored by Elynn’s mother, Billye Survis and Brenda E. Cortez, Elynn’s journey will remind you that God answers prayers; and often, in ways we’d never expect.

And about its author, Billye Survis

Billye Survis was born and raised in rural Wisconsin. After spending a few years working and traveling, she settled back in Wisconsin where she met her husband Dan. Billye has spent the last twenty years helping to build, grow, and lead talent acquisition teams, where she is able to share her passion of helping others. Billye and Dan still reside in Wisconsin with their two children, Ethan and Elynn.

You can read more about the Survis family’s story at their website.

My thoughts

Do you ever read a book, and the experience of the believers in it transports you to a time when you saw amazing faith and answered prayers happen? That is exactly what I felt as I read Room 1010. The Survis family’s experience took them out of what we’d consider regular life, into a frightening experience when their precious ten-year-old daughter was terribly injured (on the inside, where it wasn’t visible, other than externally with a bruise on the skin). Emergency care. Surgeries. Some potentially awful life-long prognoses. Potential months in the hospital.

And yet, God.

As I read Elynn’s story, penned by her loving mama, I was reminded of, and encouraged by, so many Bible verses. Here are two of them:

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these.”

Matthew 19:14, The Holy Bible

and,

“Again, truly I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything they ask for, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

Matthew 18:19-20, The Holy Bible

Life is hard sometimes, isn’t it? Especially when it’s our own children who are suffering. We would do *anything* to be the ones who are going through the hard things instead of our little ones! I so often forget that God must certainly feel that way about us when we are going through suffering. He made all of us–and how His heart must grieve when we suffer!

We don’t always know what we should be doing when we’re suffering, much less what we need to be doing when our kids suffer. We try to love them, and support them. To help them to make (or make ourselves, depending on their ages) decisions that will be good ones. And yes, we pray. Constantly. We ask our friends to pray. We turn to the One who sees everything and ask Him to help our babies.

This is what Billye did. And in Room 1010, we get an intimate viewpoint of the suffering both Elynn (and her mama, as she watched and held her daughter) endured. But oh, the faith. And the prayers.

Room 1010 reminded me that we can all come to God as we pray with the faith of a child. Even if our faith is as tiny as a mustard seed! And that God still does miracles today.

“If Mama Ain’t Happy” ~ a review of Rachel Norman’s new book (plus giveaway, ends 10/24/22)

#sponsor #partner

Friends, I have a wonderful new book to share with you! I was so blessed to receive a copy of Rachel Norman’s fantastic book for moms called If Mama Ain’t Happy. Let me share more about the book and how it impacted me. Plus, there’s a giveaway you can enter to win your own copy!

From the publisher:

If Mama Ain’t Happy
Why minding healthy boundaries is good for your whole family

Rachel used to be a mom who spent her days weary, anxious, and guilt laden. She had five kids in five years, lived on three different continents, and then was blindsided by a devastating health diagnosis. Neglecting her own physical, spiritual, mental, and emotional needs for so long—in an effort to be a selfless mother—had left her utterly depleted. And physically unwell. Then she began asking a question she’d never considered before: Could it be that taking good care of myself is not actually selfish, but maybe, just maybe, something a responsible adult does?

In this countercultural book, Rachel takes some weight off your shoulders by:

  • Offering hands-on, rubber-meets-the-road strategies to cultivate a life you aren’t trying to constantly escape
  • Teaching you to discover and claim your own limits and boundaries so you can be a calm, resilient, peaceful mother
  • Showing you how to shape your daily life and values around the few things that really matter, and how to let the rest go

If mama ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy. But when mama is at peace? Everyone benefits!

How If Mama Ain’t Happy touched me

What is your mom life journey looking like these days? I personally am still in a learning curve (even though my boy is in college!). I remember all too well the cartoon tiger Hobbes’ words to his best kid friend Calvin in the cartoon series bearing their names: “Live and don’t learn, that’s us.” I hate to admit it, but sometimes I learn more from the disasters or debacles than I do from the smooth moments of life. I’ve not been skilled in either setting boundaries or margin, which has brought me some hard lessons. And because those weren’t hard enough on their own, my self-talk made them even harder with the condemnation that we as Christian women seem all too ready to heap upon ourselves.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to have a kind, generous-hearted, wise friend or mentor who could help you get past those hard things, and guide you in making different choices with your time, your life, and your people (both little and big) so that your inner and outer lives could be smoother?

Well, Rachel Norman provides exactly that in her immensely helpful If Mama Ain’t Happy. She has been there! And even though she’s not with the reader in person, it feels as though she is. She openly shares what she’s learned as the mom of 5, with an incredibly (and she would say overly) busy life, when she was diagnosed with cancer. She survived it; and she learned so much about how to live a different life with principles of peace, wise choices, and boundaries, and in her book shares those with us. Or, as she says in chapter 1:

If my own daily life seemed too much to bear, something had to give. I was going to believe the promises of God’s Word. I was going to pay attention to my mental, physical, emotional, and spiritual boundaries.

Rachel Norman

Why are boundaries important? Simply because, as humans, we only can give or do so much. (I missed that memo.) We have our own limits, and setting boundaries on only doing what we *can* do, and caring for ourselves, enables us to care for our families. Not to mention staying healthy in all the ways that make us human (in our minds, bodies, wills, emotions, and relationships). This not only models healthy adulthood for our kids, but enables us to be present with them as good parents who are not always on the edge of falling into a stress pit. Rachel discusses how to put those boundaries into practice in these life areas:

  • Our own rules and standards
  • Our friends
  • Our emotions
  • Our own daily care
  • Our responsibilities
  • Our home
  • and last but not least, our own lives

In chapter 4 and those following, Rachel offers thoughtful questions to help readers engage further with each topic, and to examine their lives to see where and how healthful change can happen.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that this book contained life-changing counsel and wisdom for me; plus, plans I could shape for my own life to bring health and happiness to, as poet Mary Oliver said, my “one wild and precious life.” For that’s really what we are given, right? One beautiful and precious life of our own; and the loved ones that we’ll interact with in that life.

Rachel Norman’s book gave me rich and wonderful ideas for how I can embrace my own limits even as I live my life as fully as I can. These ideas *seem* simple even as they’re profound; but they are DOABLE. And have the potential to bring glorious change and beauty to our lives. I recommend to you, from the bottom of my heart, her beautiful If Mama Ain’t Happy.

Some of my favorite moments in the book

I have to share some of Rachel’s quotes that were pivotal for me. (I’ve no doubt you’d find many yourself!) Here are some of my favorites:

  • “Have you tried to be perfect, excel at everything, and live outside your limits for most of your life, hoping that this would make you worthy or acceptable? Did it work?…No?…Now is a good time to find a more realistic and gracious motivation strategy that doesn’t make you hate your life.” (p. 93)
  • “As you try to navigate all your emotions, stop beating yourself up…The next time you’re tempted to put yourself down, try treating yourself with the same gentleness you’d offer a friend instead. It might just change your life.” (pp. 128-129)
  • “I realized I was experienced at abandoning my own needs and ignoring my own limits.” (p. 145)
  • “But there are likely many areas of life in which you can, with some thought, prayer, and intention, stop going against your limits and boundaries.” (p. 164)
  • “Once you realize that you can craft a life that is a blessing to you and those around you, you will start to see the things driving you crazy as flags indicating where your boundaries are being crossed. Next you can begin investigating these flags and start solving problems, because you realize that these problems are your responsibility….And then, guided by knowledge and the wisdom of the Lord, you can begin to act like a person who is balancing…who can steer away from potholes and go down easier paths. You can recognize your boundary lines and work to stay within them.” (p. 165)

Again, if you are that mom (like Rachel, like me, and like so many others) who has carried too many loads and is exhausted; who wants to learn how to create healthy boundaries; who wants to love your family and be able to enjoy precious and dear moments with them, unmarred by constant unnecessary stress; who wants to experience real rest–this book is for you, my friend. May it bless you and bring you peace.

“More Than A Mom” ~ a review of Kari Kampakis’s newest

#sponsor #partner

I have found my newest favorite mom book in Kari Kampakis’s More Than A Mom, which FrontGate Media provided to me. It has been SO encouraging and full of wisdom for me. Let me tell you more!

About More Than A Mom

Kari Kampakis, a mom of four girls, knows what being a mom asks of us. And not that we don’t delight in that privilege! But sometimes (oftentimes?) moms might neglect their own health while they care for their kids and families. We throw ourselves, body and soul, into: meal preparation; trying to figure out how to assist kids as they interact with the internet; getting up with our kids at night, when they’re nursing, or sick, or having nightmares; driving all around town; you know the drill! Moms so often treat motherhood if it were a sprint. When really, it’s a marathon.

What if moms could take care of themselves while they are doing all these mom activities in such a way that they remain healthy themselves AND model healthy living for their kids? Kari believes it’s possible! In More Than A Mom, she details 10 areas moms can incorporate to live more healthily in body, soul, and spirit: knowing their worth; resting & restoration; friendships; conquering stress & anxiety; choosing joy; rejecting negative self-talk; making peace with their bodies; feeling capable; embracing purpose; and living in hope. And, she doesn’t just give readers lofty ideals (that can make them feel even more guilty). Instead, she talks about the ways women can embrace these changes in ways that are positive, include Scriptures, and are action-oriented. Chapters also close with thoughtful questions that will enable moms to think about what they’d like to incorporate and include in their own lives; and what, if anything, needs to change for their own mental/emotional/spiritual/physical health.

How this book impacted me

When I was almost finished reading More Than A Mom, I told my husband, “Don’t let me put this book out of my sight!” That’s a convoluted way of saying that there was so much of value to me in this book. In fact, while I’ve read it, I am definitely not finished with it yet. I plan to work through it again, chapter by chapter, engaging with its ideas in my journal, taking notes but also using it to make changes in my life. It resounded with me, enormously; and there is more of it for me to unpack.

Here are some of my favorite quotes:

  • “Like the shepherd in Matthew 18:12 who leaves ninety-nine sheep to search for the one sheep that is lost, God would travel to the ends of the earth for you. You’re not just another face in the crowd. To Him, you’re fully seen, desired, and known.”
  • “We want a positive life, and since we can’t create a positive life while consumed with negative thoughts, we’re often forced into a mind edit, a sifting through the mental clutter to clear out negativity. The expert of a mind edit is God, who created our minds in the first place. He knows our thoughts and offers healthy scripts to replace old ones.”
  • “Cultivate inner beauty..How you act (and make people feel) impacts the way people see you. Beauty is a running tally influenced by a woman’s choices…Your beauty quotient grows by simply being kind.”
  • “The reason why we accept God’s assignments is in response to His perfect love….At every age, you have a purpose, one that fulfills your heart’s desire to make a lasting and meaningful difference.”

As I read and interacted with More Than A Mom, I was so impacted by Kari’s loving thoughts and wisdom. She pointed out so many helpful actions and habits that I know I can put to work in my own life, mentally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. This book has made a difference for me; and it will continue to, I know, as I put the ideas into practice that I’d like to embrace. I believe it can for you as well!

“The Joy of Being Mom” Review & Giveaway (ends 5/31/21)

#sponsor #partner

Recently, The BlogAbout Blogger Network sent me the perfect read for May (you know, Mother’s Day)! I received two copies of Judy Brisky’s The Joy of Being Mom. One copy is for me to give away to a FINCHNWREN reader! This was a wonderful and faith-building read. Let me tell you more!

About The Joy of Being Mom

Author Judy Brisky has written a book that’s appropriate for moms in any stage of parenting, from infant (well, really, even during pregnancy) all the way through our kids’ adult lives. The Joy of Being Mom contains 11 chapters on life, parenting, motherhood, marriage, and the Christian faith; and also about how God is right there for us in our mothering, every step of the way. Each chapter includes wisdom, instruction, ideas, and even stories of Judy’s own life experiences and how she walked through them. At the end of each chapter is a short but rich study guide (including a brief chapter review, applicable Bible verses, questions, “Heart Connectors,” and a prayer), as well as a coloring page for Bible journaling lovers!

Judy is a mother of 5 (three children in heaven, and two adult sons), mother-in-love to two daughters-in-love, and grandmother to Poppy (who’s also in heaven). She and her husband Mike spent years on the professional golf tour circuit; Judy homeschooled their two boys and Mike golfed as they raised their family. Those boys are now adults. Judy and Mike have been married for over 30 years and are now involved in ministry at Gateway Church. So, Judy is especially able to speak on many seasons of a mom’s life!

In The Joy of Being Mom, Judy’s Christian faith, joy in the journey of the mom life, and desire to share wisdom with other mothers shines on every page. Readers will get to hear about the way Mike and Judy came to faith and met God; how the Bible impacted their parenting and enduring the losses of three children; and how to live in the moment and enjoy their family relationships. There’s so much that moms at any point of their lives (even once the children are grown and have left the house) will benefit enormously. Judy’s voice is also delightful; she speaks to readers as if they are women she has come alongside to love and cherish. All of that makes The Joy of Being Mom a bright and refreshing read.

What I learned–and loved–about this book

One of my favorite things about books that come out of Gateway Publishing is this: while the authors teach and instruct on Scripture, life experience, and ministry, the books are always uplifting, encouraging, and never heavy or judgmental. I may definitely feel, while I’m reading, that God has instructions or corrections for me; but I never feel like I’m being shamed or condemned, or that the authors are putting burdens on me that are too heavy for me to carry. What a relief! And Judy Brisky’s book has all those same qualities. It was lovely to read.

I loved her reminders that our words have an enormous impact on our children. Are we speaking life over them? Or are we criticizing their flaws without offering them ways to improve? Her words on timing and lovingkindness in our speaking and teaching are on point and really able to instruct moms.

She shares a story from the life of Jesus that beautifully illustrates the heart we can have as we raise our kids. Although Jesus was the Son of God, He laid aside His position in order to lovingly serve the disciples, even to the point of washing their dirty feet. Amazing.

Judy also knows that a mother’s days are both full and sometimes…long. She found herself that putting her faith and reliance on God each day helped her to walk through those days with grace and love, instead of quick tempers or irritation. In addition, she shares tons of practical suggestions that enable moms to handle the responsibilities of life, like chore charts, teaching kids to communicate with grace, and staying involved in the Bible as individuals and as a family.

I’d love to tell you everything that I loved about this book and its wisdom. But I’m also a person who hates to give spoilers! So instead, I’m going to share some of my favorite quotes. Here they are:

  • “…He knows exactly what kind of mother your children need…God equips every mother with the specific tools she needs to help her children grow into loving, mature adults.”
  • “One of the most important things we can teach our children is that mistakes do not lessen God’s love for us or our love for each other. Love is not something we have to earn, nor is it something we have to worry about losing.”
  • “Listen to your children and thank them for sharing with you. Let them know that what they have to say matters and is important to you.”
  • “When you think there’s nowhere to go and the dim light at the end of the tunnel has faded away, He will be your Light. He will show you “a pathway no one knew was there.” Whether this pathway is one of healing, restoration, or guidance, it will bring you to the heart of God. It will guide you to the place of knowing that your heavenly Father loves you, takes care of you, and is always faithful to you, even when you don’t understand.”
  • “Don’t be discouraged if there is an area of weakness in your life. We are all in the process of learning, growing, and healing. Go to the Father and ask Him to help you.”

More than anything else, I love that while Judy Brisky has tons of wonderful ideas and perspectives to share with moms, a major theme in her book is that God LOVES us all so much, and that He is ALWAYS ready to help us, to share His lovingkindness with us, and to help us with our parenting and families. We are never alone; we have the God of all comfort on our side!

“Gospel-Centered Mom” ~ A Review

Hello friends!

Do you ever have moments of #momfail?  We try to laugh about that here in our house (oh, there are so many!).  But below the silly mistakes or funny mis-speaks (you know, when you put in a syllable that doesn’t belong there or put in the wrong word here and there), I do have questions about my mom ability.

I try not to compare myself with my mom friends.  I have got friends who are AMAZING.  Who have gifts and abilities that, to be honest, I will never have.  And really, God does instruct us in Scripture not to compare ourselves with others.   We have the gifts, the abilities, the moments in time that we have and that He has given to US, not to others.

But how can I make sure that my core identity–the person I am under those gifts/abilities/personality–is healthy, and bringing health to my family?  And I’m not talking about healthy meals here (though I do think those are important).  I’m talking about being a woman who lives in the truth.  And that is a hard thing to do sometimes.  The media tells us their “truths” about a woman’s appearance, beauty, worth, importance.  We can accept as “truth” the actions that others have toward us, whether positive or negative.  We can even use our mirrors as truth-tellers.  But in every interaction we have with the people or things on that list, our minds and hearts are going to make interpretations.  And those are shaped by our own experiences, relationships, successes, and sadly, our hurts.

I have been on a journey recently where I have seen more and more the importance of living in and dwelling on the truth as God defines it.  I am trying to take my experiences and emotions and line them up with what the Bible says before I just take them on.  (It’s definitely a skill I am learning, and not always automatic.)  But, I’m also looking for other resources that will aid me in that journey.  And when I saw the title of Brooke McGlothlin’s new book, Gospel-Centered Mom, I was immediately interested.

http://images.randomhouse.com/cover/9780735289635?width=450&alt=no_cover_b4b.gif

Gospel-Centered Mom

Author Brooke McGlothlin heads and cofounded Raising Boys Ministries.  She writes for an online boy mom community, on LifeWay’s ParentLife blog and on the Proverbs 31 Devotional website.  Perhaps most importantly in terms of this book, she is a  mother who wanted to be a great mom for her kids.  But how do we do that, when culture and media tell us how to be the “perfect” family, or our own hearts compare our families with others and we feel we come up short?

Instead of pursuing those unhealthy ideals, Brooke went back to God. She learned that just trying harder was not enough.  But turning to God first and foremost was.  I love the subtitle of this book, which reads:  “The freeing truth about what your kids really need.”  Because that’s really the bottom line, isn’t it?  Not what I am feeling forced by my culture to make, but what my child needs from me to become the amazing young man that God wants him to be.  That changes my focus pretty dramatically.

In Gospel-Centered Mom, Brooke discusses:

  • The difference between the ME Gospel and the True Gospel
  • Living my life as part of God’s enormous, amazing Story instead of my own, self-focused story
  • Living in the truth (I’ve mentioned already how important that is for me at this moment in time)
  • Practical things I can do every day to live in that truth
  • How God meets us in the wilderness, shows us Himself, and loves us…even while He’s showing us the truth about ourselves
  • And one topic that is so useful but is even hard for me to write down here:  Why is God letting me suffer?

My thoughts

Brooke McGlothlin is a woman who writes the truth.  When we live in a culture that is so focused on the newest amazing beauty product that will change your life; or shows you pictures of the “perfect” family life that you should be living; or tells you unrealistic ways that you can “be your best self”—we need people who will boil down truth to its essence and share that truth with us.

In Gospel-Centered Mom, Brooke shares honestly from her own struggles as a mom and a woman who believes in God…and shares hope with those of us who are in similar struggles.  Sometimes the answer really is as simple as coming to God.  But Brooke’s words also tell us how to come to God; how to work out our lives and relationships, and even our own weaknesses as mothers–by living in love with God and in His truth.

This book is worth reading.  Check it out.

Hope Unfolding ~ A Great New Encouraging Read from Becky Thompson

I have to admit that I chose this book in part because of its beautiful cover:

Hope Unfolding image

I have to admit, my life is not organized around beauty, or beautiful things.  (We tend more to the practical, usable, and so on.)  But every now and then, I crave beauty.  I want to see and smell fresh flowers, or look at beautiful art, or take pictures of an incredible sunset.  So when I saw Hope Unfolding for the first time, I was in one of those places where my heart and my spirit were calling out for beauty.

But Hope Unfolding is much, much more than just a beautiful cover.  It is filled with joy, encouragement, truth and hope for mamas who need someone to speak those things into their lives.  And this book met those needs for me wonderfully.

Author Becky Thompson, of the blog Scissortail Silk (now BeckyThompson.com), is a mother herself.  And she knows all about how moms need to hear from God about their value, their meaning, and His love for them.  And the fact that He is happy about them and what they are doing!

In this encouraging read, Becky talks about:

  • how God has not forgotten about you
  • how His plans for you are perfect—whether you can see the way they’re working out or not
  • how He can, and desires to, be the strength that you need
  • how you don’t have to compare yourself to that “perfect” mom you know—that you can have grace for yourself
  • and so many more thoughts and ideas that will bless a mama

Summer 2016 079As I said, I received this lovely book at a time when I really needed some beauty in my life.  We were heading toward the end of a very full (scholastically) semester, I had stacks of projects I hadn’t had a moment to turn my attention toward, I had a lapful of reviews to write…and I was tired.  Really tired.  And don’t get me wrong!  I love my family.  I love what I do, and what we do together.  But it had been a full, and at times, challenging, semester.

So I received Hope Unfolding.  I read a few paragraphs of it most mornings during my quiet time.  And oh, how it blessed me!  It nourished my soul.  It spoke truths over me that I needed to hear.  And it increased my joy and helped me think about the things that are true….not the things my circumstances were telling me.

If you look at the right of the book in my photo above, you can see lots of turquoise blue tabs.  Do you know what those are?  They’re tiny Post-It notes.  Stuck on paragraphs or words that really spoke to my heart.  (There are a lot of those, aren’t there?)  Here are just a couple of my most-loved ones:

  • “What if I reminded you that even the most unspectacular moments are all steps on the path down which God is calling your heart?” (p. 26)
  • “…the Lord taught me what it meant to stop in the middle of my day and listen for how He might be leading me.  This tuned my ears to hear His voice more clearly.” (p. 45)
  • “But the truth is, the sun can only stay hidden for so long before it begins to rise again, and hope can only stay buried for so long before it begins to bloom.”  (p.63)

So many good and perfect words that I needed to hear more than I knew.  (And I didn’t even list half of the most meaningful!)  This lovely, lovely book did just what the title promised; it unfolded hope in me.

And I would say that that is an incredible outcome for the time I spent in it!  Hope Unfolding is going to stay on the bookcase beside my bed, where I can reach for it in the coming months.  I know it will continue to be a joyful, rich resource.

Enjoy!  –Wren

Emerson Eggerichs, PhD, is well-known for his Love & Respect series and retreats, in which he discusses what men and women most want in their marriage relationships.  Now, he delves into the mother-son relationship with his newest book, Mother & Son: The Respect Effect.  Its tagline is “What Every Mom Needs to Recognize In Her Son.”

Dr. Eggerichs mentions, and you’ve probably seen in recent years, how much daughters need to know they are loved and valued by their fathers.  Research has shown the detrimental effects the lack of a father’s love and involvement can have on girls and the women they later become.  But there hasn’t been a lot of research or discussion on what boys need from their mamas.  I am so happy that Dr. Eggerichs noticed that…and that he has written this book.  It’s really the book that I didn’t know I needed!

So what is the “respect effect?”

I love the way it’s defined in Mothers and Sons:  “a mother’s respect is her positive regard toward her son, no matter what he does” (page 14).  Whether it’s in discussion and life, or discipline and correction, boys and young men long for the respect of their moms, just as young girls long for their fathers’ love.  But how exactly is a mom to show this respect?

It’s honoring a boy during correction—expressing that even though he has done wrong or made a mistake, HE is not a mistake, and he is worthy of respect.  It’s recognizing that a boy’s needs relationally are different from a girl’s needs; and parenting accordingly.  It’s noticing the way we talk to our boys and being sure that we’re not disrespectful, even if there’s some major correction necessary.  Really, it’s just showing honor to these kiddos as fellow human beings….and speaking their language.

Dr. Eggerichs speaks about what God calls us to do as moms (and gives many helpful ideas and perspectives on these things).  But he also talks about the needs that males (whether young or old) have.  How they are crafted by God with these needs, and how these can be recognized and honored by moms.  These include, among others, authority, insight, strength and conquest, relationships.  Mother & Son takes a chapter on each of these, and explains how a young man or boy will express these, what they mean to him, and how moms can walk alongside and healthily parent their male children in these areas.  There’s also a quick start in the very back for mothers who want to start adding respect into their mom-son relationship but haven’t worked through the entire book yet.  Dr. Eggerichs also deals with the practice of forgiveness, and also discusses objections he’s heard about ideas.

How Mother and Son has affected me and my parenting

This whole “respect effect” thing may not come naturally to a mom.  After all, we moms are all girls!  And women often approach family relationships from the perspective of love, not respect.  I would say that it doesn’t occur naturally in me!  I grew up around women (mom and sister) and was very close to my aunts and female cousins.  And I’ve always been involved in women’s volunteer groups or women’s ministries in some form or fashion. It is very, very natural for me to approach relationships from the perspective of love.

However, I do have a son who’s a teen.  And not that he doesn’t need love—no, of course he does!  But it’s pretty incredible how loving it can seem to him when I’m attempting to communicate respect for him in our interactions.  And I have to say that, in the little amount of time I have been working through this book and attempting to put these principles into practice, I have really seen some wonderful things in our relationship.  It is amazing to see how powerful the use of respect in a mother-son relationship can be…and how beneficial it looks to be for our son.  And not just for him—but for our relationship as parent-child as well!

I haven’t finished Mother & Son yet.  Really, it is such a valuable book, but the ideas are really so new and fresh to me that I am working through each chapter slowly and purposefully.  I am really attempting to use it to help change my behavior and mothering for the better.  I can tell that this is going to be a close-at-hand resource for years to come!  (Along with my highlighter and Post-It tabs for marking important thoughts and ideas in the book!)

Quote of the Day: Mothering…..and for you, a free Mom Conference!

Here is a lovely thought for all you moms out there today:

“If every morning you look at your child as a gift from God, a blessing that He has bestowed today, and thank Him for that blessing, you will approach your children with love, patience, and grace. You have to bow your knee and say, “God, you really are good and you knew exactly what you were doing when you gave me this child.”
