My thoughts

First things first. Author Jerusha Agen. I NEVER miss an opportunity to read her books!

I have LOVED her Guardians Unleashed series. It’s filled with strong women, each one with a different skill set that is integral to the success of the Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency. They’re all very different people, many of them women of faith. One is a demolitions expert. Another, a woman who runs the cybersecurity setup for the agency. Each woman has a K-9 (or trained service dog) with a different talent and training. And the protagonist of Covert Danger? She’s a CIA agent in hiding, who’s changed her name and identity to keep herself from being framed for a murder.

Amalia Pérez is a fascinating character. One who has loved, yet been burned and betrayed by that love. Who cared for the weak and small–until she learned at a horrible cost that she just can’t. And one who served her country with pride and honor, until someone else made that service impossible. So Amalia has coped. She’s built walls. Shut down her tender heart. And become even more of an exceptional and effective warrior than even the CIA trained her to be. Until her walls are threatened by the reappearance–and assignment to protect–her best and most beloved friend from her childhood.

Michael is an effective and idealistic journalist, one who’s written exposés which brought down traffickers, criminals, and those living nefarious double lives. When he’s reunited with Amalia, he can’t believe how she has changed. And his efforts to investigate what happened to her in the years that they’ve been separated might just put them in unimaginable danger. (Not to mention the feelings they’re developing for each other, at a seriously inconvenient moment!)

I absolutely loved Amalia’s character arc. I was also inspired, again, by the female friendships of the agency. They support one another, have each other’s backs, and work alongside their teammates (including their K-9s) with trust, humor, and extraordinary strength and faithfulness. I really liked Michael (even though there were moments when I wanted to shake him) and his faith and idealism. And Rocky, too!

Don’t miss Covert Danger. You will LOVE Amalia and Michael–and of course, the dogs! Incredible suspense that is uplifting and fascinating.

Enjoy! –Wren

My thoughts

Imagine a group of exceptional women who are trained with unusual skills ranging from leadership, sharpshooting, emergency medical training, negotiation, and personal defense. Then, add in their trained K-9 dogs of various breeds, who can sniff out drugs, spot an attacker, defend their handlers, and more. Also, one more thing: the team is committed to each other’s success, survival, encouragement, and continued growth.

Add all of those things together and you’ll have the Phoenix K-9 Security and Detection Agency. And, I have to say, they are AWESOME.

In recent years, I have been deeply inspired by the strong women that Hollywood seems to be finally putting in movies. Especially in the Marvel films, I have loved Captain Marvel from the film of the same name; Okoye in Black Panther; Natasha Romanoff, a.k.a. Black Widow; T’Challa’s younger sister Shuri, also from Black Panther; and Monica Rambeau from the Wandavision series. And Pepper Potts and Maria Hill from the Avengers franchise. I absolutely loved and was captivated by not only their physical strength, but by their humor, their love, their willingness to use their powers for great good, so to speak. I am definitely something of a Marvel fangirl, but seeing strong women be so influential in these films stirred something in my soul.

Because I really believe that the world can use strong women. (Even though I will talk in a moment about a Scripture that also supports us when we aren’t strong.)

So, Phoenix (yes, she’s a woman) and her agency of women who provide investigative, protective, and security services really captured my heart. And yet, in the midst of these women who can do so much, is Cora. She’s physically beautiful, she works together with her dog Jana (a trained K-9) to detect hidden drugs being transported; yet probably couldn’t take down an attacker with her own brute strength. (I’m pretty sure she doesn’t have any brute strength.)

What she can do is detect their drugs, via Jana; and to capture them in conversation, and by the power of the Holy Spirit as she speaks to them about their choices, their families, and the good God has for them in spite of the bad they have done; those are moments that can be influential in a forever-kind of way. I’m not quite certain about her spiritual gifts, but she has seen God work miracles in hardened hearts. Even with cartel members.

DEA Special Agent Kent Thomson has been trying to break a cartel for years. He gets caught up in Cora’s life in a drug detection moment gone wrong, and is able to see her shared witness and conversation with criminals firsthand. (Although he is sort of impressed, he dismisses it as anything he’d want to adopt. He’s all about strength and outwitting his opponents.)

But going up against a cartel is always dangerous, possibly fatal, and sure to bring a cascade of jeopardy not only against those fighting against them, but against their loved ones. And there is danger that Cora and Kent, and even their own families, have heading for them. Cora has her faith to stand upon, but for years she has also relied heavily on her own abilities, her own actions, what she “should” have done to keep this or that bad event from happening. She freely applies God’s grace to others, but she has a heavy checklist for herself, forgetting that God can work even and amazingly in situations where His people don’t have strength. And Kent? He keeps dismissing her faith even as he is drawn to her.

But there’s a time coming when that faith might be all that can save them. And they might just discover that there can be strength found in weakness. (So no spoilers on that verse I mentioned earlier; but I’ll give you a hint: it has to do with St. Paul.)

Don’t miss Jerusha Agen’s Hidden Danger. I loved it, I loved its characters (and dog characters!). The author writes a fantastic faith-filled suspense thriller and I highly recommend it. As for me, I’m going back to read her Rising Danger, the prequel to this book!

Enjoy! –Wren
