A brief summary

You know that a former Mossad agent–who’s female–is going to be a tough and resilient person.

With a dual citizenship in Israel and America, Laila Rabbinowitz grew up able to speak several languages. She adored being in the Mossad until an act of treachery ruined not only her desire to work for her agency, but her ability to trust in others. She relocated to America and joined the Elite Guardians, a private security agency comprised of exceptional women with extraordinary skills.

Laila loves being with the Elite Guardians. And she loves her job and using her martial arts black belts. But close relationships? Those are more difficult for her. Laila keeps everyone at a distance; a cordial one, but a distance all the same.

Until she meets Preston Whittacker, her newest client. After his father and brother die suddenly in a boating accident, Preston unwillingly returns to take the reins of the family business. He doesn’t think he needs any help. Until there are two attempts on his life…in one day. Neither Preston nor Laila really wants to work with the other. Especially when it’s decided that the best way to keep Laila’s protection detail over Preston secret is to tell everyone that she is his new wife.

As they spend time together and play their roles, the two surprisingly find much to admire about the other. Could there actually be a relationship in store for them?

…and my thoughts

Laila is a fascinating protagonist. She’s lethally powerful in martial arts. She’s observant, prepared, ready for any kind of physical confrontation (be it physical or verbal). But her heart, broken not only in childhood but by her Mossad experiences, is locked up tight.

Preston is just as unlikely to engage in a new relationship. After a playboy billionaire life culminating in disaster in his young adult years, he disappeared and lived in a tiny town where no one cared about his money or his past. He never wanted a bodyguard, but he’s appreciative of Laila’s skills and finds himself drawn more and more to her.

Kelly Underwood creates an engaging and captivating story with Laila and Preston, and the mystery of who wants to destroy him. Their backstories and emotional tangles are fascinating to unwind, and readers will long for their clean romance to continue. IF they can both stay alive, that is!

Pick up a copy of Defending Honor. You will LOVE Laila’s and Preston’s story and author Underwood’s way with words and story. Lynette Eason and Kelly Underwood, keep these novels coming!

Enjoy! –Wren

A few of my thoughts about this series…and more!

If you love strong women protagonists, thrilling suspense and mystery, and clean romance (with a little faith thrown in), then The Elite Guardians series is just right for you! Each of these books has characters (both male and female, and sometimes even canine) that you will totally root for; and they’ve got fascinating backstories as well. Each book’s storyline is well-crafted and will keep you turning page after page, til you’re suddenly at then end (and wish you weren’t!).

Here’s an excerpt from the third book in the series (starring an ex-Mossad agent), Defending Honor.

Excerpt

“Preston!” She screamed over the crackle of the fire and whipped out her phone to call 911. Alarms from a fire truck blared in the distance, so she shoved her phone back in her pocket. Help was on the way.

She skirted the perimeter of the property, staying clear of the flames. “Preston!”

When she hit the backyard, the sound of barking stopped her dead in her tracks, and she looked at the burning house.

Preston’s face appeared at the window across from her. He banged on the pane. “It’s stuck! I can’t find anything heavy enough in the room to break the glass.”

Laila pulled her weapon from her holster. “Stand back!”

Preston looked at her, his eyes wide. She held up her gun. “Back away from the window. The bullet will shatter the glass.”

He got the message and retreated. Once she knew she wouldn’t accidentally shoot Preston, she fired a single shot. The bullet pierced the center of the pane, and the glass splintered into a thousand fragments. “Okay,” she yelled.

Preston reappeared, using his elbow to knock out any remaining pieces of glass. He disappeared for a second but returned with a blanket to cover the windowsill.

Preston ducked out of view again and returned with a golden retriever. “Can you grab Duke?” he asked. He lowered the dog out the window, and Laila wrapped her arms around the dog’s middle, lowering him to safety. But not before she got a paw in her face and a slobbery lick.

The sizzle of fire made Laila’s heart stop. She wouldn’t rest until Preston’s feet were on the ground. “Preston, you’re going to have to jump.”

“Run, Laila. Get out of here. The propane tanks in the garage might blow. I’ll be right behind you.”

He threw his legs over the sill, and Laila bolted the minute his boots hit the ground. They’d reached the woods at the edge of the property when a tremor nearly knocked her down. The house erupted into a giant fireball, and flames lit the sky like a fireworks display.

For a moment, all they could do was stare.

“I think I might need a bodyguard after all,” Preston finally muttered.

Lynette Eason’s “Crossfire” ~ a Revell Reads Review

#sponsor #partner

Revell Reads sent me a copy of the newest Lynette Eason book in the “Extreme Measures” series: Crossfire. If you’re a fan of strong female characters and suspense reads, you will want to check out this book!

About Crossfire

The FBI. SWAT teams. Hostage situations. And the approaching 15th anniversary of a terrible event from Julianna’s past; one that still gives her nightmares.

She’s able to sort of bury the memories all the rest of the time. But in the days approaching the anniversary of the school shooting when she was a student, the memories refuse to be buried.

Julianna is a top-notch FBI special agent and negotiator. In fact, she hasn’t lost a hostage yet. But she’s about to be involved in negotiating for hostages in a cascade series of crimes. First, in a courtroom where not only the judge but the jury and some marshals are taken captive. While she’s working that assignment, she meets Clay Fox, whose sister is one of the hostages. Clay is a former army sniper, and while he’s exceptionally competent at his job as a school resource officer, he’s got pain and secrets of his own.

But when Clay sees Julianna in action, he is a bit…smitten. Slowly they become friends. And coincidentally, Julianna’s sister Dottie is a student at Clay’s high school.

But the cascade of hostage situations is beginning. There are some terrible ones. And the perpetrator is asking for Julianna as a negotiator by name. He, or she, is escalating. And those that Julianna loves the most might become the next targets.

My thoughts

Whew!

Once again, Lynette Eason has crafted a highly readable thriller with appealing and even vulnerable (at times) characters. She unfolds Julianna’s story in a fascinating way, even as a sweet romance might be developing between the special agent and Clay. They do have a lot in common, after all, beginning with their careers. They also have unhealed pain from the past that suddenly impacts their present.

I enjoyed seeing Julianna’s work as a hostage negotiator. (Not that I’d ever want to see that in person!) She is measured and effective, and readers will totally root for her. Eason also illustrates that dealing with past pain (or not dealing with it) really does impact the current day.

Crossfire is a great read. You will love it if you’re a fan of suspense thrillers with a bit of clean romance and a lot of mystery; intersecting with faith. I recommend it!

Excerpts from Impending Strike

I think you’ll definitely want to read Impending Strike after getting a taste of the book, courtesy of these excerpts!

Excerpt #1
Lizzie struggled to maintain control against the long grass and uneven ground. She swerved to
miss a fence and struck a rut, sending the car airborne, and they flipped upside down. She
screamed just before the hood crashed into the ground and glass shattered around her. The jolt
forced her body forward, the seat belt stopping her forward motion and whipping her back against
the seat. The vehicle teetered and creaked and came to rest at an odd upside-down angle.
The seat belt cut into her shoulder, and her arms dangled from her inverted position. Blood
whooshed in her ears. She blinked and then blinked again while her mind scrambled to put the
pieces together.
The hiss of the engine pulled her from the depths of confusion. An accident. The tail she’d
picked up at the warehouse. Oh, no—Charlie.
A groan escaped her lips as she twisted to look at him.
Blood trickled from a gash on his forehead. Or was it the same cut from before that had
reopened? The man had more bruises than Lizzie dared to count and added more every day. She
stretched over and searched for a pulse. The strong thump against her fingers sent a wave of relief
coursing through her.
What if the person decided to make sure he’d succeeded in killing her and Charlie?
She had to get him out of here.

Excerpt #2
Each planned drug buy raked on Charlie’s nerves. The lifestyle wore on him. After a year of
setting up his presence in the drug scene and five weeks of full work undercover, he wondered how
much more he had in him to continue.
He shoved his hands in his pockets and fiddled with his burner phone. His touchstone. His
lifeline to the safe world. No names, only speed dial numbers of his Elite Guardians Agency
teammates and Quinn. The women had insisted that he include their numbers. He’d resisted, not
wanting to put the members of the agency in danger. But they’d reminded him that’s what a team did. They had each other’s backs. He was honored to be included among the top bodyguards in the
nation, even if he was the only male. Not that he had a problem with that. He trusted them more than
he trusted the police officers he’d served with on the Atlanta PD. And that said something.
Knowing that God was watching over him and that the team was a phone call away allowed
him to maintain his calm demeanor and play the part of the cocky, confident dealer of his alter ego,
Rod. He left the phone in his pocket and strolled down the sidewalk like he owned the neighborhood.
“I can do the hit.” A gruff voice drifted on the night air.
Charlie froze and scanned the area, searching for the source of the words.
“Not so fast,” a second man argued. “You can’t mess this up. We have one shot at killing her,
and if we miss, they’ll close ranks.”
The hair on the back of Charlie’s neck rose. He ducked behind a row of trash cans next to an
apartment building, grimacing at the strong garbage odor, a mixture between fish and rotten eggs.
Forcing himself to focus, he strained to hear the conversation, but the men moved out of earshot.
Charlie slipped from his hiding spot and clung to the shadows on the edge of the street,
following his targets. His ratty shirt and stained jeans, not to mention his unkempt hair, gave him the
ability to blend into the neighborhood, but a hinky feeling of being watched crept in and stayed.

Lynette Eason’s “Hostile Intent” ~ a Revell Reads review

#sponsor #partner

I always enjoy Lynette Eason’s suspense thrillers, and I was so excited to get to read her newest in the “Danger Never Sleeps” series, Hostile Intent. I received a copy of this book from Revell Reads, and it was a wild ride of a read. Let me tell you more!

About the book

A horrible crime has just been committed; sadly, against an entire family. FBI agents Caden Denning and Zane Pierce are called to the scene. There don’t seem to be any obvious suspects, but there is a security camera recording that shows evidence (except the perpetrator, of course). Caden and Zane discover, however, that there is a similarity between these murders and a number of others that have been committed across the U.S. What is the connection between the families, and who could have committed such terrible acts?

Ava Jackson enlisted in the Navy and loved her time there. However, when her mother was hospitalized due to dementia, she left the military to be with her mom in her final days. But an attempted kidnapping of Ava in the hospital parking lot is prevented by her skills and Caden’s being there at just the right moment. Who would try to kidnap Ava; and what does that have to do with the other killings? There is a connection, but it just isn’t visible yet.

The question is, can the crimes be solved before a vital witness–and Ava–are attacked as well? And will the sparks that fly between Ava and Caden develop into anything?

My thoughts

I love suspense and thriller novels. Especially when they involve secrety-agent stuff between nations and individuals. Hostile Intent totally fits into those categories, and I couldn’t put it down! Lynette Eason understands how to pace a story; how to create characters and situations that hold the reader spellbound; and how to weave in a little romance to brighten everything up. I found Ava’s character to be fascinating and sympathetic. She’s a tough woman, and that strength not only came from her Navy career but her unusual family life. It also helped that she’d had almost a lifelong crush on Caden, all-around great guy and FBI agent. Special agent, that is. Their mutual attraction is appealing (will Ava FINALLY get the guy??) and their faithful fight against cruelty and evil is something the reader can totally get on board with.

The crimes, results of years of global and national politics (and poor decisions here and there), are horrible but also understandable (from the villains’ points of view, anyway). And they certainly remind us that the pursuit of revenge because of personal pain doesn’t really go well for anyone. Eason’s gradual unfolding of the secrets from the past that are still affecting the present not only kept my attention but kept me racing to the finish.

Hostile Intent is another fantastic addition to Eason’s “Danger Never Sleeps” collection. Appealing characters, fun love story, and fantastic suspense will please readers both old and new.

Enjoy! –Wren
