About Perfectly Arranged
Professional organizer Nicki’s one (okay, relatively huge, to her client) mistake causes word-of-mouth about her business–and, her business itself–to completely dry up. As she’s packing up her office, she knows that she’s faced with the need to move in with her mother, who’s unfortunately a hoarder. Clearly, that choice would be the most stressful possibility for an organizer and clean freak. As she’s casting around for ideas on how to move on, she receives a phone call that might just help her keep afloat while she looks for jobs in the private sector.
This temporary gig is to set up the shoe closet for a demanding client, Ms. O’Connor. Finding an old, frayed business card, with Chinese characters written across it, is the first event which takes both Ms. O’Connor and Nicki to China; a land where they neither read nor speak Mandarin (or any other language spoken there). Plunged into a culture that’s completely different than their own, they cope with the assistance of a guide hired to take them to the address located on the business card, where the discoveries they make might just change their lives forever.
My thoughts
This book absolutely won my heart! I loved stepping into Nicki’s shoes (um…pun intended?) as she enters a culture so very different than her own, from the language, to the traffic, to the food, to local customs. That is an adventure like no other. (Plus, I’ve been fascinated with some of the locations Nicki gets to visit and admire and it was amazing to read about her “experience,” which may have been influenced by author Liana George’s own.)
Nicki, although she doesn’t know it when she arrives in China, is about to go on her own spiritual adventure as well. For quite a few years, I’ve loved the model Henry Blackaby describes in his Experiencing God Bible study, which describes the adventures in both relationship and service that God invites us to go on with Him. What Nicki faces is something that she’s never had to confront or engage with, and it seems impossible. How can a woman in a country not her own attempt something that might bring enormous change…in her own life AND others’? Watching Nicki walk out her journey (physically, emotionally, and spiritually) encouraged my soul, reminded me of the joys of experiencing God in a foreign land, and, as I said earlier, completely captured my heart. This contemporary fiction read, with its strong elements of Christian faith, will capture yours as well!
Enjoy! –Wren
