The marvelous Carolyn Miller, who’s written some of my favorite books, has begun a brand-new series set in Canada, on a working ranch that doubles as a Western town for film and tv. In the first book of the Three Creek Ranch, A Cameo for a Cowgirl, we get to meet Cassie, daughter of the ranch and cowgirl-of-all-trades on it. But we also get to meet a Hollywood heartthrob–Harrison Woods–whom Cassie doesn’t like. At all.

About the Book

A Cameo for a Cowgirl

Title: A Cameo for the Cowgirl Series: Three Creek Ranch #1 Author: Carolyn Miller Publisher: Independently Published Release Date: June 14, 2024 Genre: Christian Romantic Comedy

Welcome to Three Creek Ranch, home of the James family for over a hundred years, complete with its own Western movie set. Franklin James might be a famous pro hockey player, but just because he’s Cassie’s older brother doesn’t mean she wants to step into the limelight. She’s too busy helping her dad run the ranch and managing the ranch’s movie set, and negotiating with the giant egos of movie stars like Harrison Woods, who’s supposed to be filming the new TV series of As The Heart Draws. And while his TV hero characters might be hugely popular, Harrison’s real character seems anything but noble. Cassie is convinced he’s hiding something, and that this diva’s nice guy moments are just an act. Can she remind him what being a true hero is all about?

About the Author

Carolyn Miller

Carolyn Miller is a bestselling Australian author of historical and contemporary romance. A longtime lover of romance, especially that of Jane Austen and Georgette Heyer’s Regency era, Carolyn holds a BA in English Literature, and loves drawing readers into fictional worlds that show the truth of God’s grace in our lives. Her Regency novels include the Regency Brides and the Regency Wallflowers series. Her contemporary novels include the Original Six and Northwest Ice hockey romance series, the Muskoka Shores romance series, and those in the Independence Islands series. Her stories have been described by Publishers Weekly as “a winsome exploration of life, love and faith” and witty “with snappy repartee that rockets off the page” (Library Journal). Readers enjoy these books that are humorous yet also deal with real issues, such as dealing with forgiveness, the nature of really loving versus ‘true love’, and other challenges. Her novels can be considered ‘inspirational’, and may appeal to readers of Christian fiction, who want stories of hope and redemption – with a twist of Aussie humour.

My thoughts

Harrison is on Three Creek Ranch to film a continuing series, “As the Heart Draws.” He’s a nice guy, Harrison–but he has his own difficulties and past pain that still impact his daily life. And maybe there is an event (or two) that makes him seem like a diva. And Cassie cannot get past that. Despite her faith in God and training in turning the other cheek, Cassie REALLY dislikes this guy. And sort of picks a (verbal) fight with him whenever they end up in the same area. Maybe her conscience is prickling her a little. But honestly, she is so busy–helping her dad run the ranch, being the point person for the filming crew, and caring for the costumes and incidentals–not to mention organizing her brother’s wedding–that hearing God’s voice is hard above all the noise.

Harrison’s thoughts about Cassie are pretty much just as dismissive. She seems like a wannabe…something. Maybe a wannabe cowgirl! When he is sure she is just a props and costume person tagging along for the film. Why is she wearing that cowboy hat and boots? Please.

There’s a lot going on with these two, who keep getting thrown together (though they are certainly going out of their ways to keep that from happening) by circumstances. Perhaps God just might have something going on after all.

You will absolutely love Carolyn Miller’s A Cameo for a Cowgirl. The characters are wonderful, even as they’re not so winning as the book begins. But everyone is on a journey. Watching this duo is a joy, as we get to see not only their outsides, but what’s going on inside them as well. I’m thrilled that this is the start of a new series–we will get more of Harrison, Cassie, and her two sisters!

Enjoy! –Wren
