What a fascinating book! I read it in almost one sitting (and yes, I did read through one meal), as I absolutely HAD to discover what happened next. Keane, in Japan for a championship fight, meets Ami in a metro station. And though he really needs to focus on his upcoming fight, he is entranced. And Ami? She just wants to step away, for one day, from her proscribed life.

My thoughts about When the Ocean Roars

Keane Temple opened a door for me into a world that I probably knew existed, but never gave any thought to. He is a mixed martial artist–and it is his life, and his focus. Training. Perfect nutritional eating. His Christian faith. And his absolute focus lasered on the upcoming world-class championship fight against Japanese champion Niko Ono. In this two-week period when the blond American is training and prepping in Japan for his fight, there’s not much room for anything else.

Ami is beautiful, brilliant (her area of scientific research includes plate tectonics and geological history), but longing to step away from her family’s planned life. When she unexpectedly meets Keane at a train station, she thinks: One day. Just one day. Then I’ll go back to the family plan.

But Keane and Ami have a chemistry and a meeting of the minds (okay, yes, and also, there’s that physical spark) that causes them to draw near to each other. Until the truth comes out; and shows them that any relationship between them will cause nothing but high-level stress and problems.

Or will it?

If you love a beautiful, clean romantic story with strong elements of faith (as well as real-life relationship difficulties and professions), you must pick up a copy of Charlsie Estess’s marvelous When the Oceans Roar. She has a magnificent ability to invite the reader into the emotional lives of her characters. I loved watching their inner thoughts and feelings develop and be expressed. And, the setting and storyline were also fantastic. I was entranced with Estess’s descriptions of locations in Japan. The experiences (MMA fighting and training, Ami’s free diving and family issues) the novel walks us through are fascinating as well. All set in beautiful, formal Japan. (I’ve wanted to visit there for years, but Estess has fueled that wish even more!)

This book is so worth your read. Wonderful characters, fascinating conflict, and God’s presence hovering over and in all that Keane and Ami do. Marvelous!

Enjoy! –Wren
