Janilise Lloyd is a former junior high school teacher who lives in Northern Utah with her husband and toddler. She balances a love for running with a love for all things dessert. The Whisperer’s Wish: what a ride!
Laurelin’s dearest wish is for her beloved little brother to be healed. Because of her gifting, she’s able to acquire the elixir that’s keeping Pippin alive–but he’s needing more and more, and even that doesn’t seem to be helping.
But now there’s a chance to compete in the Pentax (actually designed to reveal the kingdom’s new king or queen); and the winner is granted a wish by the Matrons of Ausland. Laurelin is counting on winning, all to save Pippin with that wish.
But as one can imagine, there are many hurdles Laurelin will have to cross in order to win the Pentax. And she’ll need the help of the pygsmies, the tiny, hummingbird-like creatures whose bodies produce elixir, to do so. As a whisperer whose gift has been hidden to all but her own family, and Aaron, the black marketer with whom Laurelin needs from time to time, Laurelin can call the pygsmies to herself, and even ask them to carry her (yes, fly her) in the air. (Laurelin’s whispering abilities can also command objects to move; handy when she needs to get through a gate or window.) But to be selected from her province, Laurelin will need to gain the duke’s approval, a friend, all her skills and gifts; and to win the Pentax she’ll need even more.
Wow! What a book–and story–and heroine! Laurelin is both strong and incredibly loving, spending her life and gifts to gain more life for her ill little brother. She and her family have concealed her gifting, as other whisperers have been taken captive so that those more powerful could use their powers. Plus, she is busy doing all she can to help Pippin.
Janilise Lloyd has created a fascinating world, with fascinating creatures who roam it (in addition to the humans we’d expect). The pygsmies themselves are intriguing; tiny, hummingbird-like creatures with healing abilities but also with their own free wills. Whisperers can communicate with them, and even compel them; but Laurelin must learn their ways even as she tries her best to win. Lacking the skills and cultural training of her competitors (she is, after all, a commoner), she still brings so much to the table. But will that be enough for her to win?
Definitely, and especially, if you’ve loved the adventurous, magical worlds created by Lewis, Tolkien, and Suzanne Collins, pick up a copy of The Whisperer’s Wish. I did not want to put it down–and neither will you!
